I had no idea what it meant - I imagined it might be some kind of animal, especially after hearing the alternative version that replaces it with "tiger". It wasn't until like 5 or 6 years later I found out the meaning, and then about that long again until I learnt the actual history of the word - was sometime inbetween these two marks where I realised "hey, I shouldn't use this word".
