Big housefire that evicted my gf and I a few months back. The games and controllers were stored in an area that wasn't as heavily damaged and they were able to be recovered, but the console was in our room and it was charcoal. I have a hankering to play me some motherfucking OoT, and nothing can sate me until I do.

I consider it $130ish worth spending, though I'm still sad I lost this one, since I had it since I was a kid and it was still going strong.

I haven't been ready to approach digging through what I have left of my childhood SNES stuff though. I know I'll need at least a console since that burned up too; it may have been yellowed and needed duct tape padding on the cartridge slot to properly seat games, but it was my first vidya. Donkey Kong Country bundle for my birthday, played it on an old Sony Trinitron with metal channel pushbuttons on the front and horz/vert knobs on the side ;_;

Time to start rebuilding the retro collection, boyos

People spend $1000 in a weekend on actually just drinking alcohol on a "drinking trip".

If you want to spend $130 on something that will make you happy, and you can afford it, go fucking nuts.

Idk how you feel about something like this, but I would recommend getting an Everdrive 64 along with your new N64. If you're okay with that kind of thing.

Eh, I guess part of me is still trying to justify it to myself, since the apt we moved into has significantly higher rent/bills despite being substantially smaller than our last place. I also just dropped $600 on a refurbished laptop within the past month, which ate into my savings more than I'd prefer, however... given that I used to have two old laptops plus an old workstation/file server that were all playgrounds for my computer nerdery, and now they're all gone, I'm trying to think of it as an investment in a return to normality.

Somehow, my Xbone survived though. I'm just not keen on playing it right now

This. Will save you in the long run unless youre okay with the prices of N64 carts now.

Not opposed to that at all. Had an RaspPi3 running Retropi with a few bangers on it. Lost that too. Still have the PS4 controller I used for it though

Looking at cost it's probably something I'd do in the future. Carts are becoming downright prohibitively expensive, plus the added headache of having to crack one open and solder in a new battery because they're all at least two decades old at this point

Fuck that, I'm lucky to have gotten stuff like Conker and FFIV/II as cheap as I did years ago. I love retro but I can't afford being a collector. Ain't nobody got time for that

This. I got nothing against collectors but I ain't that. Even though I still have all my games on display from my childhood in my retro room, I got sd carts like everdrive in all my consoles for actual play time.

Dont pay over $40, i see them all the time at the fl a market for $40 or less

This is northern VA, the defense contractor and datacenter hub of the US. We don't have "flea markets", we're too bougie for that. Our few thrift stores have shitty obnoxious clothing and tacky household decorations, with the newest electronics being old-but-not-old-enough-to-be-cool hifi stuff at best, normally it's just a Mr. Coffee or some lame as seen on TV appliance

What was the cause of the fire?

Roommates smoking in the house. They were a father and son in the same room, both insufferable slobs that refused to not smoke outside despite myself, my gf, the basement tenant AND the landlord repeatedly telling them not to. Finally bit everyone in the ass. (don't get me started on them, the issues go far, far deeper than them being dumb assholes that burned the house down, believe it or not)
