Article says he was speaking through an interpreter. Maybe the lack of materials in his language made him not want to go through the legal process. But you can't really rationalize murdering these people for any reason. There is a sense of entitlement landlords often have because it's legally their property and in their view they're doing the tenants a favor by letting them stay. I think the legal structure of how rent works in many places, such as the US, contributes to these types of thoughts. But in the end the man is clearly disturbed, especially since he apparently took pleasure in the killings.
