If what you want is a frustrating challenge, then Dark Souls is gonna scratch that itch. If youre looking for a more traditional fantasy arpg setting, Dragons Dogma is the correct choice.

I think I would enjoy all the games cause I don't mind classic wrpgs, so gothic isn't automatically out of the running

I haven't really played any of them, but the open world in Dragon's Dogma seemed pretty cool.

Gothic is for people who like open world stuff (lot of things to do, whether any of it is worth doing depends on the person). Dragon's Dogma is a really good action RPG (because the combat is actually good) with an interesting story. Dark Souls is the omnigame only surpassed by its cousin Bloodborne.

I played the gothic series when they first came out and loved them. Though Ill admit they are very outdated compared to many more modern options. But if graphics and weird controls dont bother you, then they are great experiences. The type of games where theres no way markers and if you wander into the wrong area too early youll get killed in a single hit.
