The Star Wars sequel trilogy didn't kill the brand/fandom.

GoT's last season(s) did.

I think the real test will be how well received all those GOT spin offs are. People still love Star Wars stuff like the Mandalorian but I kind of feel like the way Game of Thrones ended has turned a lot of people off of the franchise entirely.

I'm not even interested in the last two books now unless the last book has an ending that's overwhelmingly positively received.

Also not holding my breath that the last book even comes out.

Thrones easily. Star Wars already sucked with the prequels and TFA was good. Season 5 did suck, but it didn't ruin the series and 6 was pretty damn good even if it wasn't on par with the first 4. Even 5 had some real good stuff. So Thrones had further to fall than Star Wars.

I didn't even think season 7 was terrible but you could see the story was staring to rush towards the conclusion.

The fast travel made it feel disjointed as well.

I agree with this.

Keep in mind that they erased the EU in order to make these garbage ST films. Game of Thrones fans can still find sanctity in GRRM's books and the possibility he will ever release the last ones.

Disney shit all over the OT and PT and erased the EU with the ST.

That being said, it is a close race because both are utterly garbage and worthy of all the scorn they receive.

Reading one of those books is a major time investment.

It nearly did.

Disney is lucky that their Star Wars tv shows are being done by competent people like Filoni and Favreau.

Huh?

Reviews are generally spoiler free.

Your being bothered that I won't read the last books unless the ending is received well is baffling and strange.

GoT for sure. It really soured the franchise for a lot of people. No one really talks about it anymore either at least not that I see.

Sure, the sequel trilogy soured people on Star Wars too, but there's plenty of fans that focus on the older trilogies. There's also still good content like Mando still being put out that's popular.

Oh now this is a galaxy brain take. Star Wars not only wins as the bigger flop but is also responsible for GoT's flop?

I need you to unpack this because I gotta know where you're going with this.

D&D were offered their own SW trilogy. Because of this, they declined HBO's and GRRM's offer to make more seasons of GoT and flesh out the story. They ended up rushing GoT, which turned public opinion against them and as a result, Disney has seemingly cancelled their offer.

Not gonna lie. I legit forgot that D&D got offered SW movies.

Still this is a petty take because D&D failed GOT entirely on their own. It was going garbage long before they put the accelerators on. Think of it like the South Park "Casa Bonita" episode and D&D are Cartman. Cartman did shitty things throughout the episode, but everyone mostly remembers the last minute of it and less about Cartman trying to convince Butters that civilization has collapsed.

For sure, the quality went downhill after they ran out of material to adapt.

Still, they declined the studio and the author's offer to flesh out the story, so I still blame SW for indirectly making GoT even more of a mess.

I would say Game of Thrones because they clearly didn't give two shits about that final season. Starbucks cups and water bottles left in scenes just shows how little they cared.

If you want to hold that, that's your call, but I think the simpler explanation is D&D just got bored with the project and wanted to put GoT in the tank because they didn't remotely have the talent to keep fixed on something through to the end. Star Wars, Confederate, Netflix. It didn't matter who came along with an offer because they were so ready to bail, but still wanted to have their names all throughout the series to the end.

I guess GoT, people are still talking about Star Wars in a positive way.

Whenever GoT gets brought up it's always about how awful it became. And with good reason. That last season was abysmal.

Game of Thrones had the larger fall. But as much as I could 100% blame D&D for this, I'm still going to die on the ending being GRRM's fault in the long run. They didn't sign on to finish the story before he did, they signed on to adapt, and everyone can agree that from an adaptation standpoint the show up until it ran out of original material shone. Even stuff that's hinted at in the story but not detailed was done very very well.

Having read the most recent two books they would have made fucking awful television and introduced a whole slew of new plot threads and characters that it would have taken ages to get through and thats if they could keep the cast together and George actually knew where they were going. Spoilers; he doesn't. That's half the issue as to why book 6 is taking that long.
