I'm up to the first boss already in this game. It looks badass.

First third is amazing. The early game hits you repeatedly with twists designed to take veteran players off guard, new characters and ideas wrapped up in a bunch of fanservice.

The rest bounces back and forth between being damn good and being kinda sloggy.

That said the first third is almost as long as standard EO game on its own...

It's arguably too much of a good thing. Its the size of two EO games in one. The Dungeon selection is a little wierd from a visual standpoint but the raw puzzle design and such has arguably never been better.

Like most EO games it's a really good game that has several notable strong points but also several notable weakpoints compared to the other games in the series.

Everything I agree with here.

Nexus probably the best in the series, but I recommend others to new players since Nexus is more of a capstone with tons of throwbacks and can be a little much for uninitiated. If you are a new player and able to break into it just fine, then ride on.

The last few EO have done turn-based combat so well (class variety, difficulty, options in combat, etc.) probably my favorite series in that regard. Most modern game devs been struggling to do turn-based games properly for a while now.

move all remaining groundhog mercenaries to the front lines. Have sheep troopers squadrons A and B flank the cows. They're using DC-17 hoof blasters.

The turn based battles in Nexus are great.

Just curious about your playthrough, when you say first boss, you mean the Blossombeast?

I don't quite remember which individual boss it is, but it is early on, there is first 'real' challenge boss soon that is part of a double battle. It is kinda the first skill check boss if you are a normal or higher difficulty. It definitely turns a lot of people away as they see it as artificial difficulty or a grind check (I think this mainly happens because in a lot of big name modern turn-based games like Dragon Quest, there isn't much you can do against such a boss besides get better stats or more powerful skills). Thankfully this isn't the case in Etrian Odyssey and such bosses instead expect you to have a strong grasp of the games mechanics and team building, grinding in the later EO games is slow and unrewarding as a result of this design which I think is fantastic.

Anyway, just a heads up that you may run into it soon and not to give up or write it off as an unfair difficulty spike / grind wall. Consider its patterns and options available to you, particularly ailments and binds.
