Outrage after 2 women accused of stealing public money in Ohio and 2 VERY DIFFERENT sentences with the white woman stealing 248,000 worth of and the black woman tealing 42,000 worth of dues gets over a YEAR in prison!!

Danielle Sydnor, president of the Cleveland Branch of the NAACP said "God only knows what would have happend if the sentencings would not have been in such close proxity to each other. We wouldn't even probably be having this conversation today, because this would have gone under the radar and been just the normal course of business of what happen sin our criminal egal system every single day"

Black people convicted of crimes in america, on average sentences about 20% longer than whites of the same crimes

Debbie Bosworth, who is white, and a clerk with the Chagrin Falls village utilities and building departments stole 248,000 over 20 years by pocketing cash from residents utility payments and then covered her tracks by moving money from the building dept to the utility dept.

She was indicted on 22 charges including multiple counts of 3rd degree theft and plead no contest meaning she neither contested the chrges nor admitted guilt. She paid back some of the stolen money from her 200,000 pension and covered the remainder by cutting a cheque on the day of her sentence.

Prosecutors sought prison where she could have been snt to 63 years..but the Judge, who is white, opted to give her PROBATION because he paid some of it back and the mayor said she was a lovely woman who didn't ask for jail time in his letter

Karla Hopkins, who is black was not so lucky as she was a secretary and executive assistant at Maples Heights High School after pocketing 42,000 worth of dues and fees she'd collected from students and parents.

She plead guilty to a single charge of 3rd degree felony and her lawyer argued she had mental health issues and a gambling addiction and has since received treatment and gone through a job placement program.

She hasn't yet paid back all of her dues and she emptied the 20,000 in her pension to pay back the bills after she was fired and since paid 5000 toward her restitution.

But Judge Rick Bell, who is white sentenced her to 18 months in prison and scolded her for dipping into her pension

Sydnor however said this is a story of race and of means as Hopkins argued she had no other means of paying back the money which Boswroth was more easily able to do and said "individuals who are poor and innocent are more likely to spend more time in jail and incarcerated than people who are affluent and guilty"

Sydnor is joining other activists and black leaders calling for more transparency in the justice system so this doesn't fly under the radar and community leaders in Ohio are calling on all the county judges to join the project

looked it up, she had a "top rated" criminal defense attorney and she was able to pay off the difference. the other woman barely had anything and had a much less experienced attorney. plus her judge was a certified asshole.

the dirty secret of the legal system is that the more money you have the less the law applies to you, and the main reason i brought it up in the first place is because boiling it down to purely a race issue covers that shit up.

and while some of that is racism a very large chunk of that is the fact they're often underrepresented in court. now you can easily make the argument that they lack the money because of systemic racism and the lack of generational wealth, but the point is that they're poor and the poor are always at a huge disadvantage in court.

One paid back 100% of what they stole and gets probation.

The other paid back 60% and gets jail time of 1 1/2 years.

I know a black woman who was convicted of stealing 30k from her job doing fake returns. Just got probation. Then 3 years later she got charged with aggravated assault. Probation again. She's not wealthy either. It just seems to depend what area and what Judge it happened in.

don't get me wrong I agree with you but I think that even if you're affluent then you're still more prone to get harsher sentences if youre a minority.

Read the law. Both white and black are treated equally as they should be. Difference in outcome of similar cases are going to based on several factors, race not being one of them.

For example I'm white and I was facing "up to" a year in jail for going 80 in a 55 zone. And that's on a bike (not car) on a quiet country road. I'm not even kidding! They're strict here in VA. The only reason I didn't get jail time is because I have a perfect record both criminal and on the road. The wreckless charge still stuck, they just dropped the jail time to a heavy fine.

It was made clear that a repeat offense in the 80+ range will result in a 100% chance of me going to jail for a month. Needless so say that scares the hell out of me so I sold the bike because it's too damn easy to get tempted.

So you believe there is *no* racial disparity in sentencing in any cases in the US despite studies to the contrary based on... your experience?

If both women paid off the money and the black women got a harsher punishment then maybe this racebait story would make sense. As it is though, the woman who paid back what she stole got off easier then the woman that didn't pay back the money she stole. I don't really see the big deal there.
