according to the other topic, this is their starting package (compared to gov engineer work):
120k/year base-ok so far i make a decent amount more
30k/year bonus max, with 15% (18k) guaranteed-um, ok that's a good chunk
30k/year stocks-wtf...
50% match on 401k up to gov limits-WHAT THE FUCK

idk about their health benefits but i think it's safe to assume they are p good, at least as good as my gov package

like seriously...wat? that seems like a major market inefficiency, did i get into the wrong field?

my only solace is knowing they probably actually work 40 hours/week (i'm at around 16-20 hours of actual work)

Google is a trillion dollar company. Nearly a 2 trillion dollar company. They could easily afford to double all of that compensation for all their engineers.

Lmao no software Dev in the fucking planet works 40 hours a week.

We bill 40 hours a week but that ain't the same thing as working 40 hours a week.

Keep in mind google engineers are living in apartments with like 4 or 5 other people because cost of living has so skyrocketed (and public transit is so fundamentally lacking) in those areas that said salary doesn't cover rent.

Working as a software engineer for one of (if not the) largest tech companies in the world? I'm surprised it's not higher considering you have to live in the most expensive part of the country.

And also the other stuff about workload

Well, a Google engineer probably has a house with a mortgage and a semi-decent car, so they're probably fine on that end.

Nah, even on the 120k alone you can live comfortably enough in sf

For the past few months, a guy named Brandon has been living in a truck in Google's parking lot and documenting the experience on his blog. He's a software engineer at Google, a company famous for its generous amenities. Brandon is able to eat meals, take showers, and work out on Google's campus, which he says makes it practical for him to live in the back of a box truck with no kitchen, running water, or other amenities.

He says he's doing this to save money. Rent for a studio apartment costs around $2,000 per month, he says. The truck cost just $10,000, and his only recurring expense is $121 per month for truck insurance so just a few months into the experiment, he's already saved more money than he spent on the truck, and he expects to save tens of thousands of dollars over the next few years.

Why bother paying rent when you can shower, eat, work out, do laundry, and sleep at your office?

Google perks are so good some employees say they've spent weeks living on campus to avoid paying rent, according to a Quora thread.

"I didnt become a software engineer to be trying to make ends meet, said a Twitter employee in his early 40s who earns a base salary of $160,000. It is, he added, a pretty bad income for raising a family in the Bay Area.

The biggest cost is his $3,000 rent which he said was ultra cheap for the area for a two-bedroom house in San Francisco, where he lives with his wife and two kids. Hed like a slightly bigger property, but finds himself competing with groups of twentysomethings happy to share accommodation while paying up to $2,000 for a single room.

It varies based on deadlines and shit that the sales department doesn't know how to say no to.

The most I ever worked in a week is 70 hours. I've heard stories of 100 but never from Google.

what...all that rent is cheap. 2k for a studio is nothing on that salary. 3k for a 2br is nothing when you make like 150k liquid. if you want to have a large family, that is your mistake

I mean I'm all for saving money but let's not pretend that having your office right there and spending a majority of your time there is healthy and should be celebrated
