insurance evaluated my car last year and said it was worth 4k. i'm currently street parking daily but next month i'm going to have a new condo that includes parking in a structure. was gonna wait until after that to buy a new car since i can park it inside (also since i didn't know how much i needed for down payment, i wanted to save it just in case)

so today, according to the repair shop i hit something and my tire popped, some rubber got loose and damaged the back bumper, which became partially detached

the shop is estimating this as a 2k repair

well fuck, guess i'm getting that new car sooner than later

This wouldn't have happened if you knew how to change a tire.

Im surprised you own a 4k car

i drive the same car that my parents got me when i graduated college in 08, it was brand new back then, cost them about 15k. now, 13 years later (and many accidents later) it's evaluated as worth 4k

i had the money saved up for a new car for quite some time, but wanted to make sure i could afford the place i wanted first. which now i know

no point in getting it repaired tho, if i spend 2k and sell it for 4k...i'm losing 2k either way lol (and it's probably worth under 4k now)

not really, only way to avoid it was to pull over the second i heard the sound, but i was trying to make it to the exit (which i didn't make)

Sell the car for $2k and use that as a deposit for your new ride. Personally i would try to buy something 05-15 used because these newer cars all suck and will more than likely experience electrical problems.

Buy a new used tire and take the bumper off of its un-drivable. Save up for a down payment, wait nvm you dont need to save. Sell a watch and get a new car after the move. Sell the old one to a mechanic/used car dealership.

Better than it costing more than the cars worth.

Anyway a plain raw plastic bumper can cost up to $200.

All the frame parts that come with it can add about $300.

One with matching paint can add another $300.

That's like $800 for pieces of plastic.

Like my unpainted KIA bumber was around $200.

A painted one to match was like $500.

Have to have the front of my car painted anyway so I just bought the unpainted one and will use the $300 towards getting the whole font end painted on my car.

Just go with your plan to get a newer car. No point in sinking money into a car thats no good.

In today's car market you may as well pay to fix it honestly. I wouldn't be buying anything new right now if I had a choice, it's hella inflated and not likely to go down until next year.

yeah, that's the plan, just sucks because:

1. i haven't moved yet. gonna have to load up my car to move and don't want to damage a new car that way. also still gonna have to street park until sept

2. i wanted to take my time and shop around and do research to get a good deal on a car

sell it and take the bus for a month. 12 round-trip isn't worth rushing a car purchase and the inconvenience of street parking. rent a u-haul for your move.

I doubt it costs 2000 to put on a new bumper. Just get some clips and put it together with some rope.

If you can find a trade in near you maybe do this.

Or I would suggest finding someone to do repairs for you, or if you feel confident looking up youtube vid on doing the fix yourself. Maybe even just a bunch of zip ties would do the trick.

Zip ties + tape + spray paint and nobody would know the difference. Hold you over until you move, depending on when your next inspection falls into the timeline of your move

That's not happening. The car market is like the housing market, there are no deals only inflated prices.

A Certified Pre-Owned vehicle wasn't too much higher than going rate last I checked. And the market is raising the value of used cars more than new ones.
