Had the GameCube come and gone without a proper Mario title, it's likely Nintendo would be a third-party publisher today. For all of the infighting between Sega of Japan and Sega of America, I really think the absence of a Sonic game on the Sega Saturn is where they burned their bridge with consumers. They had that and a compilation of the Sonic games on Genesis, but never had a proper Sonic title for the system.
