KH1 just seems atrociously bad nowadays
Like take agrabah for instance:

boss 1: invincible from most angles, the damn stingers are BS, the suicide pots are BS, it does too much damage
boss 2: the head flops around too much and shakes you off, its too hard to land any hits. sometimes it can seem like RNG to jump up there in the first place
boss 3: runs away from you the entire fight. like 95% of the fight is running to the platform the boss just moved to

and ursula is a special kind of BS

funnily enough, the best boss is the one most people struggled with, which is Riku 2, which seems to be 100% skill based and still fun today

They will absolutely fuck it up.

You know... if youre into Organization XIII & Xehanort, thats cool. I cant dig it though. Characters exclusive to Kingdom Hearts are best done... hmm

God I hated watching that cutscene every time I died. It was such a troll move to put such a long scene directly in front of such a hard fight in the days before they allowed skipping cutscenes. But now I'm inclined to agree with you. With Guard and Counterattack, it's actually a fun fight.

KH1 had a decent story. Nothing mind-blowing, but it was about what you'd expect if you heard Disney and SE was making a game. Nice and simple and clean.

KH2 combat would be too over the top for quaint little KH1. Also nobody fucking touch the card gameplay of CoM that I'm the only person in the world that loves. Also Birth by Sleep can't have good gameplay, then it becomes even harder to convince silly zealots that the game is fucking awful.

I'll be honest, I played KH1 years ago and hated it. It made me not want to play any of the series. But I eventually gave it another try after my friend wouldn't stop gushing its praises and getting my curiosity up. Then I merely felt neutral on it. Wound up never beating the game, made it to Hollow Bastion then just watched the rest of it. Wound up doing the same thing with Re:CoM, quitting after the 3rd floor or so. Then I watched 358/2, played 2 and LOVED it to the point it was the first KH game I actually beat myself, and moved on to the rest of the series afterwards.

It wasn't until a few months ago that I wound up beating KH1 for real, streaming it in a Discord server for some buddies of mine, and I loved every minute of it. So much so that I recently finished up another run, streaming it for a DIFFERENT group of pals. The former group also got to see me beat Re:CoM for the first time, and that was... significantly less fun.

But all in all, KH1 has really grown on me. The platforming will never not feel janky, and it's a lot clunkier than future titles, but I wouldn't have it any other way tbh.

But yes Ursula is absolute dogshit and I do NOT miss that boss fight. Atlantica as a whole was awful. As cringe as it was in 2, at least there it was a super short world, comparatively speaking, and not a pain in the ass to navigate.

im not sure if this should really count as a gameplay thing, but in the final boss chain in the final world, they kept interrupting the bosses with cutscenes non-stop and ruined some potentially great moments

KH3's combat is serviceable which is a shame because KH2's was really, really good. Though admittedly it's only the optional bosses where it really shines.

They released critical which is way harder, and also fair, and yea I agree with it being floaty, but I guess they wanted to focus on aerial combat

I like Kingdom Hearts 1 & roughly half of 2

could do without the Princesses of Heart, but its appropriately weird & honestly very interesting. Im not sure theres a suitable replacement which would have the same effect, and cause the player to really reflect on the meaning of Kingdom Hearts ~ of course, that whole thing was lost on the sequels in favor of holding grandiose battles & inadvertently immortalizing Ansems whole shtick in the most unironic fashion I think Ive seen.

KH1 is such an odd duck, for me, in that as much as I like it, when I really break it down, I dont actually like most of the worlds.

Destiny Islands and Traverse Town? Great; excellent intro worlds.

Wonderland and Deep Jungle: they're OK. About as 'ok' as it gets. Functional, but nothing special.

Olympus Colosseum? literally just a gladiator pit hub world. Fun combat challenges, but the world is nothing.

Agrabah? Awful. Hate navigating the city, hate the Cave of Wonders, hate the bosses. Terrible world.

Atlantica? Oh shit. Agrabah, I am so sorry. Take me back, daddy Cat Cave; anything is better than this.

I dont think I've ever encountered a person who even pretended to like Monstro.

I actually really like Halloweentown. Dunno, maybe it's just the catchy music.

Neverland is another good one.

Hollow Bastion is weird. I love the music, and the aesthetic. It has a lot of the best story moments. The bosses are some of the most fun. But... dammit if actually playing through the level doesn't annoy the hell out of me. The puzzles here really turn this otherwise great world into such a slog.

In combination, it turns the game into one where I'm almost constantly trying to rush through the part I'm in to get the the next, "better" part.

As someone who just replayed KH1 for the first time in a long time, I think the only thing I miss from it are its puzzles and the trinity stuff. The puzzles can be basic, but there's a charm to em.

First time I played KH2 I unlocked Final Form during one of the final boss fights after a point of no return. It was still hype for me at the time because I was doing flashy anime shit with a Drive Form I've never seen before, but I did still have to figure out how to actually unlock it later and that's the kind of shit that would just annoy adult me.

No it's really every Kingdom Hearts game that does this. 2 might have the best pacing since you get stuff like Timeless River and Hollow Bastion second visit which really shakes the story up. KH1 is you bumbling around until you get to Hollow Bastion and the actual stakes and villain appear. This is just how the games are.

Even Now KH1 in my opinion is the best game overall in the series. With the best story, gameplay, and worlds, pacing and so on.

Issues like the camera I never really had a big issue eith and in my opinion also were a little overblown. Nor the harder worlds like argrba or Atlantis.

You don't lose the items. They just stay on them until you decide to remove em. I wouldn't give guest party members anything too valuable. Prioritize Sora then Donald and Goofy
