This whole situation is surreal to me. It was obvious this was going to happen when Trump was negotiating the withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan with... the Taliban.

No one seems to be wondering what we accomplished there, then, what the sacrificed lives were for.

Don't worry. I'm sure this is the far-left's fault for not being patriotic or some shit.

We accomplished absolutely nothing

IT was stupid and pointless

But I don't understand why that sunk cost fallacy is considered an argument to stay there foreever

What the whole thing was really for: more money for the military industrial complex and private military contractors plus using the fear of a supposed Islamic takeover of America to scare dumbass rural racists into voting Republican.

We accomlished nothing. Which was what everyone knew was going to be the end result like over a decade ago. The options were to either commit to permanently remaining in Afghanistan or to decide it was futile and leave.

What's odd to me is that we have military bases in many other countries. How much would it really have been to keep a standing force in Afghanistan at this point? Wasn't most of the heavy fighting done?

lol, that'll end well for them. taliban has shown for decades they deal in bad faith, and muslims have a pretty significant reason to hate china. maybe this is america's chance to point all that terrorism shit in china's direction.

We should have committed to a permanent presence. Or at least an ongoing one until maybe someday things calmed down.

By leaving, we might as well have never even been there 20 years ago. It makes the whole past 2 decades pointless

How many decades are we supposed to stay? 3? 4? 10?
Our very presence and military operations have served to delegitimize the hilariously corrupt and incompetent government we created while legitimizing the Taliban.
If it makes you feel better, Afghanistan will be unified after we leave.

The whole situation was fucked and never going to end well the moment they were invaded ultimately.

I'm just not sure what leaving does other than let a terrorist organisation claim the entire country now though, which I don't see ending well for anyone. Very much doubt they are going to just "settle" into just a brutal dictatorship of their own country.

The dumbest part of this is that after 9/11 we talked to the Taliban about giving us the location of Bin Laden. Their requirement was that we recognize them as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. So now that we've left and the Taliban is going to take back over, we could have just avoided the last 20 years of death and destruction and recognized them 20 years ago.

The people of Afghanistan are honestly better off trying to fight off the Taliban on their own. If the US government is there, any efforts will be sabotaged.

This is cause of us, and the faster we are gone, the sooner they can start treating their own cancer.

If the Afghan people want their country free of the Taliban then that's up to them.

Staying there and propping up a pathetic and corrupt illegitimate government for 20 years did absolutely nothing.

Everybody who has tried to conquer Afghanistan in the past to present has failed.

Doesn't matter if it was the British in the 1838

The Soviet's in 1979

The US in 2001

The moment you "Leave Afghanistan", the locals will either fall into Civil War or the Taliban will try to recreate their little empire.

Either you stay in Afghanistan, or you leave and let it fall.

The problem is that the area is incredibly tribal and nobody recognizes the lines that the British and other UN powers drew on the map in that region.

This is the real map of Afghanistan based on Ethnic & Religious differences.

These are the Ethnic Groups in regional split amongst the entire Middle East overlayed with Western / UN Nation State lines.

The realities of the British and their Global Nation building and marking lines on a map after WW2 and the formation of the UN led to alot of unpopular rulings and formation of nations that didn't have consent or input from local tribes. So many of them don't recognize the country borders.
