Was he a sympathetic character to you?

I want you to grab your nuts. Grab your balls. I want you to take a handful, and just grab your nuts real quick. Swivel 'em around in a circular motion.

No. He threw sulfuric acid at Burns wall and destroyed it. If he were a real sympathetic character, he would have saved a toddler from the path of a speeding car, and pushed a criminal in front of it.

Great character and the exact polar opposite of Homer. Much needed. Not sure I cared much for him dying and ultimately the very weird end note of the episode that almost betrays the entire point they were making just to make a bigger note about the state of t.v.

It honestly feels like the series lightbulb episode that promptly ends with it shattering instead of lighting up the room permanently. Whether or not that was intentional is debatable. However, I think it is hard to not see this episode as THE pivotal turning point for everything the show was to what it became (still good, imo, but it will never match the first 10 years...or arguably, first 8).

As for Frank himself, he was a golden character killed off for laughs and further sullied by the "sequel" episode with his son that felt like them trying to make a ratings play based on a popular episode (though to be fair, I remember that episode when it originally aired and it wasn't as horrible the first time, but rewatching it, yes...Side show Bob is the ONLY reason to watch).

Otherwise, firmly of the belief they could have made him a reoccurring character and maybe should have. Then again, they do have Flanders...

One thing that always stood out to me about the son episode is it shows a change in how Homer is perceived by the people in Springfield now. In the original episode, Grimes goes crazy because everyone loves Homer despite his stupidity. In the second episode, the family has trouble narrowing down who is trying to kill Homer because everyone dislikes him now.

Heh, you know, that most definitely is an undertone in that episode. Maybe a few of the writers did still know what they were doing. lol

"Homer's Enemy" is such an odd episode

On one hand, Grimes is right that Homer is an incompetent buffoon who doesn't really deserve a cushy job, nice home, and loving family.

On the other hand, Grimes' obsession with bringing Homer down and rebuffing any attempt by Homer to become his friend makes him an unlikable douchebag.

EDIT: oh yeah, and the 'sequel' where it's revealed Grimes had a kid (who appears middle-aged himself) with the justification being "my dad liked hookers" is just... no
