As someone who is still technically registered Republican, I would never associate with them in any form ever again after what they allowed that Dipshit in Chief to do / get away with.

If the #NeverTrumpers like Romney want to form a new party, I might be interested, but even then it'd be a very hard sell.

Not really, no.

even the righteous republicans like Bush Jr. John kaizck and Liz Cheney were guilty of courting the extremists and things only got too out of hand for them recently.

there were a few honorable ones out there like McCain (dead now) and Kizinger but you can count them with one hand

One of the biggest problems the GOP is dealing with currently is that their misinformation echo chamber is so tight-knit and the integration between it and the actual party is way too close. This cuts out necessary intra-party debate and has allowed a culture of fear regarding "speaking out and angering the base."

Kaley McEnany is a freaking Fox News host ffs.

It's a shame because we can't have a functioning democracy without at least two legitimate, functional parties.

@DarkRoast youre giving them the benefit of the doubt and thinking in good faith. That is not how they operate.

think back when trump was President. This happened a lot:

trump: this is X
his followers and the pundits: this is x, libs
*literally 2 hours later*
trump: this is actually Y, not X
the same followers and pundits: this has always been Y, not X, lmao libs
*half an hour later*
trump: its actually X
his followed and pundits: lol it was always X, dumbass libs

no one can in good faith react like that. They obviously act in bad faith. This is why they could see the carnage from 1/6 in video everywhere and then insist it was peaceful and full of love just a few weeks later despite the fact they say it with their own eyes

They still aren't going to think that you or your wife are actual human beings worthy of the same rights as other people.
To the original question of the topic? No. The party line post coup attempt is either that it was not as bad as it's being portrayed (it's actually worse in reality) or that it was justified. So either Fascist or Fascist adjacent. The party has been pandering to this group since Nixon. It's just grown beyond their control now.

It wasn't quite that bad until after 2012, when the GOP started to openly embrace the concept of misinformation-spreading on social media. I think the key turning point was Sean Hannity openly promoting the Seth Rich conspiracy theory. At that point, it was clear that Hannity was going to be a gateway drug into that sort of thinking.

Yes, politics change with time and so do political parties. I'm not saying it definitely will be salvaged, but it's silly to act like anything about the future of politics is a certainty.

If we were having this discussion 70 years ago you'd be asking this about the democratic party.
