If something is funny, it's funny. If it's racist, I'm not going to defend it but laughing at it doesn't inherently make you racist imo. Maybe I'm wrong and it does. In which case, you just have to not laugh next time. You laughed because you found it funny, not because you were trying to be racist. If you become aware that it was racist and try not to laugh again, then I think you are not racist. If you keep laughing, then maybe you are racist. Maybe you should go think about why it's so funny.

Also if I was the type to really get offended by comedians I'd definitely racism is worse than dark humor, which has literally been a natural human cioing mechanism for ages.

I think it depends on if the joke is "isn't racism ridiculous" vs "<race> people are bad/inferior lol"
A more difficult question is what constitutes an acceptable holocaust joke

Why is it that the "People have the right to be offensive!" crowds always seems mighty upset over other people being offended, and there being concequences to being overly offensive?

If you get booed for making a racist joke, it's your fault for not knowing your audience. "Oh, comedians have it so hard these days!". They really don't. It's the same as always: Either be funny and know your audience, or get off the stage.

People get too caught up on of what they're saying is offensive and not if what they're saying it's harmful. Most racist / racial jokes are harmful. They spread ideas in a pseudo poetic format around that cause real world consequences in social relationships that end up hurting people either directly or indirectly.

So think of a joke. Then think "if someone actually believed this literally, could this cause problems for the subject of my joke?" And if the answer is yes then it's not a joke you should make.

Daniel tosh got away with it. He did a segment once where he read what black people (maybe minorities in general) thought about his racist jokes. One black guy said it didnt bother him but felt he could dunk on asians more. So tosh of course did that right after iirc

But on that note watched a stand up done by a mexican cop recently and he was talking about profiling Mexicans he called it Mexican probable cause. Said if your rims cost more than your car thats mexican probable cause and a bunch of other things like that

Jokes like that I think is fine. Jokes that basically equate to "haha all black people are criminals" not so much.

Definitely. Even if you took racial jokes out of his repertoire. Maybe not the same level of success, but he'd still be hilarious.
