I think part of it too is that Community occasionally talks about how Abed's autism negatively impacts his life. Like the episode where he makes the video about his family, it's made clear that Abed thinks his autism is the reason his parents divorced and he's never been able to talk about it for that same reason.

I haven't really watched BBT, so maybe I'm just talking outta my ass, but I don't think it ever really frames Sheldon's personality traits as a negative in any serious way. He's an asshole and that's funny, it never negatively impacts his relationships or upsets him.

Done just that. Obviously there was a nerd or two they consulted with for TBBT, but the humor is clearly aimed at non-nerds.
Really? Because ivee had tons of points where I laughed extra because they made an actual joke out of the topics. BBT isn't amazing or anything, but the hate it gets is ridiculous.

Idk I guess I just assumed the main character would be the more likeable character and it was clearly between leonard or Sheldon.

I dunno. Turk is more likable than JD.
Niles is more likable than Fraiser.
Coach was more likable than Sam

Guess it helped my perception that there was focus on Leonard getting the "pretty girl" and he succeeded. for the record im not arguing he was the main character just stating I thought he was.

Amy literally breaks up with him because he goes like 3 seasons of barely being physical with her and like 3 episodes after they get back together, he sleeps with her.

Like yeah, maybe he doesnt get the comeuppance that a lot of people want him to get every episode hes a dick, but to say he doesnt have any negative impacts is laughable.

True, but the negative effect only lasts 3 episodes & Sheldon is an enormous pain in the ass to everyone around him for basically the entire show.

Ehh

I prefer that to the Will they/Won't they of Elliot/JD and Cox/His Bitch Ex Wife in Scrubs.

Great show but Dr Cox summed it up well

"Will they? Won't they? Who Cares? No One."

You just get so bored of their incredibly unfunny on again off again relationship and chasing each other.

Just break up or be together. No one cares about chase.

At least I don't.

Same with Britta and Jeff come to think of it. Did anyone in the world ever care about their relationship?

I've only seen about 10 episodes of TBBT.

I see Abed in nerd-dom, maybe dialed down but there. I don't see Sheldon in nerd-dom. He is more a parody of nerds than a nerd. He's the "Not Another Teen Movie" version of a nerd.

Early on there were Jeff and Britta shippers. By season 2 or 3 everyone was one being Annie / Jeff shippers or Jeff / The Dean shippers. By season 3 Britta became the butt monkey of the group.

Theyre broken up for 10 episodes. Platonic friends for one of them before getting back together in the end of the 10th episode. Then sleep together the next episode.

The only person Sheldon doesnt have a negative episode with really is Penny because she acts like a big sister to him.

Yeah, TBBT has issues but at least be honest about them.

So it was 10 episodes? Who fucking cares? Sheldon still ends up getting his relationship back & having it prosper-- that was my whole point. He's a giant pain in the ass to everybody for the entire damn show with no real consequences to his terrible behavior.

See signature.

Someone made a good example earlier where Abed is a mostly regular example of a nerd, whereas Sheldon is what a writer that doesn't understand nerds thinks a nerd is.

Sheldon is pretty much constantly shitty to his friends, including Penny, who generally treats him very well. Sheldon just has no likeable qualities really.

He literally grows as a person through the series and has negative things happen to him all the time.

Just because its not enough to satisfy you doesnt mean he doesnt face negative consequences for his actions.

He literally loses a girlfriend for like weeks until he makes a change to his behavior. Yeah, hes still semi-abrasive and still has Sheldon qualities, but he does change throughout the entire series.

Again, TBBT has some legitimate gripes about it. If youre going to shit on it, at least be correct with your gripes and not just what you see the internet say about the show.

I bothered to watch the last episode and the literal plot arc of the final episode is Sheldon coming to terms with his behaviour unintentionally hurting the people who care for him and redeeming himself.

I haven't watched many episodes but Sheldon hurting the feelings of his friends and having to deal with that is constantly a thing in the show.

I get why people dislike TBBT (it's obviously overall a typical sitcom) but yeah a lot of these complaints are more about what they think the show is more than what it actually was.

Years ago my sister had a group of her very smart "nerdy" college friends over and HOLY CRAP the annoying conversations they would have. It sounded scripted and something like a mix of Big Bang Theory and Dawson's Creek.

Yeah in my family members case it was the general social awkwardness like the characters displayed. She also said some showed a surprising lack of knowledge in things us normal people consider normal. Like one example was everyone was issued key cards attached to extendable leash clips (or whatever they are called) that simply scanned and she witnessed one of them squattimg down to try and get it to scan instead of pulling it down and holding it over the scanner

tbf, Howard is a walking Jewish trope with all the Jewish jokes they make with him. Which is why I didnt respond to the guy who made that point.

Raj isnt as big of a walking Indian trope so its pretty laughable that Kanjo is butthurt about it. Oh no, his parents are rich and theres 2 times where he asks them to help him with girls so they help arrange a marriage. Such bad!

If youre gonna complain about Raj, complain about how it took 6 seasons for him to talk to a girl without alcohol.

One thing that was awful was how they joked about Leonard's mother mentally and emotionally abusing him.

Dude even breaks down in tears and the audience is cackling, so the writers made him "forgive her" which they thought was a happy ending.

I remember hearing that a lot of the science in TBBT was real but they were really sloppy and fake with their pop culture references. If I took a shot for every time they got something wrong, I'd die of alcohol poisoning.

I swear, I cringed so hard when they talked about having a memory card for Super Mario 64. I was like "WTF" and it just made the cast sound stupid because if they had ever played it, they know better.

Yeah Scrubs did the same thing and it's kinda fucked up

JD's dad is abusive and Cox goes "Well it could be worse and you're a doctor so he did a good job then as a dad. Being abusive is the best part of being a parent!"

And the JD apologises and fawns over his dad.

It's a little awkward and very "Mental health doesn't mater, worship your parents." 1940s boomer logic

I really don't think it is. Community has some really lazy writing.

0 Continuity or character arcs. Every episode is a dumb self contained bubble with 0 attempt to make sense or form any emotional connections. On par with a childrens cartoon.

There's a reason it's not nearly as popular. It has some great jokes but the level of writing starts out mediocre and ends up poor when Troy and Pierce leave.
