It's hard to blame racists about that when you had scientists writing baseless bullshit letters about how it couldn't possibly have come from a lab, despite not having gathered any evidence for the (otherwise plausible) natural emergence theory.

I think people had some serious conflating issues with "it didn't come from a lab" meaning "it definitely came from a dog eating wet market" or some shit.

SARS is already out in the wild in bats. They're all riddled with it. You know how we fucked ourselves by spreading it around until we got Delta variant? Bats been doing that shit for years with SARS until it turned into COVID.

I think that's misleading. A disease already infecting many humans may mutate into variants that are more viral among humans, and there's selective pressure for it to do so. A disease among a bat population, of which most variants are unable to infect humans, is not as likely to produce a variant that does. Obviously it can and has happened, but most such mutations will never migrate to humans and just die. The fact that it's been mutating among bats for longer is not really significant.

I mean we already have an example of this in rabies. Rabies also has several variants. Several of these are significantly less severe. One specific variant is transmissible to dogs, however, and that variant has a 100% fatality rate in humans. So a bat gives rabies to a dog, a dog bites a human, human dies.

But also there's pretty solid genetic evidence in the COVID RNA that it was spliced by a lab specifically to transform a sample that was not viral to humans into one that was.
Hold up SARS COV 2 came from a lab? I thought that was just 5G conspiracy nutjobs saying this.

Wade is already being debunked. His basic thesis is "follow the money". He is a Fauci hater who was a science writer for newspapers but is not a scientist or doctor.

What was racist about saying a virus came from animals in a wet market? It seemed like credible institutions believed that was the case initially.

Seems like this is just another dumb thing to pretend to be upset about.

This. I don't get the point of feigning outrage online on behalf of groups of people who not only don't know you're doing it, but wouldn't reward you in any way if they did

Ehhh, there was some people blaming the Chinese that participated in the wet markets, not realizing it was due to economic factors.

But criticising wet markets in terms of a government failure isn't racist.

There's really nothing racist about pointing out the fact that wet markets tend to generate zoonotic disease crossovers.

And I say this as someone who is half Chinese.

Money was not central to Wade's article. Reading this response, it's off to a bad start by calling Wade's article a "conspiracy theory". At no point does it allege any group conspired to do anything. That's not just a semantic quibble - a big part of why conspiracy theories are easy to dismiss is that it's difficult for groups of people to keep a secret and unlikely that there would be some shared malicious intent among multiple parties.

It makes a far point that it was unfair of Wade to call the letter "an opinion piece", but it's a minor point. I'm not impressed by how much this response complains about Wade making ad hominem attacks while having no restraint whatsoever on doing the same. Then it goes deep into the biology arguments, which I'm not competent to assess. But I'm also not inclined to take the word of "experts" who insisted it wasn't airborne, that masks don't work, and have on multiple occasions been caught telling manipulative lies hoping to steer people's behavior rather than trusting them with an honest answer.
Wade is a conspiracist crackpot. Find better sources.

Wade literally does not allege any conspiracy, and there's nothing crackpot about his article. It's very soberly and technically written. It could be wrong, maybe, but it's a serious, well researched argument which deserves a serious rebuttal. The medika.life article is a serious rebuttal, mostly. "He's a conspiracist crackpot" is not. You only push people away by so callously dismissing sincere and careful opposing views.
