Just started using it to follow NBA free agent transactions. Every reply is people just saying "ratio" or "ratio'd" against each other.

being ratioed (sometimes spelt "ratio'd") is when "a reply to a tweet gets more likes than the tweet it was replying to usually indicating the unpopularity or stupidity of the original tweet."

In the terms of NBA it probably has something to do with his ratio of throws vs actual baskets.

Idk, I'm talking out my ass but that's what I would assume. I dont use Twitter

These are distinctly different things. Which one is correct? (Genuinely asking)
My understanding is it is the latter.

Liking or retweeting a tweet is a very simple process done by people who agree with a sentiment. Whereas responding to a tweet requires more work. This generally means a good tweet will have many more likes or retweets than replies. A bad tweet however will have few people liking a tweet and an increased chance of someone responding to argue/mock/shame.

The first time I heard the term it was describing the second thing.

When a reply says "ratio" they're hoping their reply gets more tweets and likes than the original tweet.

This is correct

then how come I see replies of "ratio" to a tweet that's like literally just seconds old. or two randos are saying "ratio" to each other when neither of their tweets are getting any likes or comments

It's a filler post used to increase the comment count on a tweet they don't like. Thus increasing the ratio.

It is the equivalent of hitting dislike.
