Thinking of buying the PC version on steam. Is the game as long as FF7?

If you play to 100% completion, its a good deal longer. If you are just playing to beat the game, Id say its comparable to FF7 in length.

Oh I see, I didn't realize it was actually somewhat big. Always had the notion that it was like a 24 hour game. I've seen my friends play in middle school and it always seemed so easy.

The website howlongtobeat.com can give some rough estimates on what you are looking at concerning playtime. It isnt an exact science, but it does a fairly good job of letting you know what you are getting into. It shows that FFX is a bit longer for a first time play through than FFVII:

I don't understand why it's so lauded. It's got a decent combat system but it's so damn linear. People hated on FF13 being a hallway when 10 is basically that too

XIII has no real towns or much backtracking which makes the linear maps worse. The battle system was the best part and even that's really limited until you get control of the full party, which is like chapter 10(out of 13 iirc) or close to that. Also a much worse cast and plot imo, and I say all this as someone who at the very least enjoyed playing through the XIII trilogy.

Linear doesn't automatically mean bad

FFX had a strong story and good characters

plus came out on the PS2 where sprawling open worlds were harder to make

FF13 felt lazy from design and plot. FFX you can feel the passion from the devs, even at the shitty parts

Kinda like saying "Why do people like the Dark Knight but hate Batman and Robin!? They both are about Batman and aren't realistic!?"

Every single FF game is linear, except for its airship stuff which is barely a part of ff games except the earlier titles. The problem with FF13 is that it is linear artistically (you are literally running down tubes the entire game) meanwhile ffx has you zigzagging in all its maps, talking to npcs, and its doesnt seem linear. Spira feels alive. What did you think of FF13's world. What was it even called..again?

Huh. I think you're right. I assumed it just had a nonsense name like Fal'cie

And what did you think of the people of gran pulse, the characters, the politics, etc.

For the most part, its interesting except for the poor cast of characters from the original Final Fantasy XIII. There are some parallels to real world religion such as the main antagonist being a version of the Pope or the lCie alluding to principles rooted in Hinduism, Buddhism, and other religions.

Its also neat how the people of Cocoon, the continent above Gran Pulse, see the world below them as corruptible. Its somewhat similar to the Christian perspective of the material world.

I only wish this information was told in a more cohesive way in the first game of the trilogy. The writers had some interesting ideas but all were conveyed poorly to the players.
