I don't know what that means.

This tells me
1. I'm very stupid, but I knew that
2. We need to talk more about Hmong Americans because clearly we aren't.

idk, whenever people talk about Asian-American people, it's often people of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean descent, and sometimes Filipino/a and Vietnamese.

Hmong-Americans rarely get representation, and the last time I saw any notable presence in the media was with Gran Torino.

I'd never even heard of the Hmong people before this past week. I'm thrilled to learn more about all the various ethnic groups all over the world.

And since I haven't seen anyone else make this joke yet: Hmong us

I didn't know about hmong people before. After I read a story about her, I did some more reading about the group. In my book, that is why covering things like this matter.

Let's also be real. The Olympics are all about the biographies and histories of the competitors. The games are always in the US at least covered as human interest stories and not purely athletic.

If an American born to parents from Malaysia or Singapore wins, most likely the media won't say Singaporean American or Malaysian American though.

It's selective reporting

If they were the first Singaporean/Malaysian American to win a gold medal, than yeah they would.

This is quite the topic.

The term "Asian American" does a lot of heavy lifting because it covers such a vast array of cultures and peoples.

Here's John Oliver on the subject:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29lXsOYBaow

The point is that America is home to a metric ton of different cultures and this is a nice chance for one often overlooked to get some representation.

I too first learned about the Hmong people from Gran Torino. Would be great if I could associate those people with more than a movie directed by a Republican shitheel.

Hmong people has been represented a few other times in TV shows and movies other than Gran Torino.

Doua Moua was in the recent live Mulan as Po

The girl is Hmong and she is speaking Hmong
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYn0KjE8yrc

There is an episode about Hmong people in show Doogie Howser. Yes the one starring Neil Patrick Harris. It has a pretty good depiction of the Hmong people in that episode and the Asian actors were mostly Hmong.

There's also a copy cat episode of that Doogie Howser Hmong episode used for Gray's Anatomy. The plot for the episode looks like it uses a lot of the material from Doogie Howser. The depiction isn't really that good in this one and the Asian actors in this episode aren't Hmong.

She has talked about her heritage a good amount times. There's a reason why she is not as celebrated for being Hmong as compared to Suni Lee and I'm afraid that reason is not a good one.

I would guess she's also just more talked about in general because she won the gold in women's individual all-around, which is one of the most notable Olympic events.

Also her heritage is probably emphasized since her parents were refugee immigrants. This topic is dumb.

During the Vietnam war the Hmong people were allies with the American troops. Im sure they dont even cover this during your history class on the Vietnam war hence so many people are living under a rock and it shows.
Hunted by the Vietcong.
Drove out from their homes.
They dont even have a place to their own and were probably descendants from another Asian tribe.
A lot of them came to the states thanks to the refugee program.

Yeah they would celebrate.
