Cause Otacon is there alive which could make his ending to 1 canon, meaning Meryl didn't escape with Snake. Plus the only mention of her iirc is when Pliskin is dreaming he can mumble her name.

Was it not clear that both Hal and Meryl survived Shadow Moses until 4's trailers?

Hm. I'm trying to remember the exact details of the game's story but I always thought that in at least one of the endings one of them died.

there is no direct reference to meryl in mgs2 vanilla beyond a throwaway line in an optional codec conversation after fighting olga on the tanker where Snake says he's had enough of tomboys. At least not that I'm aware of.

In MGS2: Substance there is a whole Snake Tales substory where Meryl shows up working for terrorists and there's even a boss fight against her. It's very clearly not canon even if it's written pretty interestingly, but it might have confused people somewhat
