Be honest

Just curious because im wondering if i should pursue this hobby that i used to do as a teen but stopped for almost a decade. Ill never be able to compete with these new age kids/teens that are just so damn good at it these days. They are doing stuff that no practitioner thought was possible a decade ago.

My body is already worn down from my practice back then so i cant push over my limits too hard. I cant even do most of the stuff i used to do either so have to recondition myself.

Hobbies aren't(inherently) about being good at something. They're about the enjoyment you get out of it

I think it was Kurt Vonnegut (?) who said that it took him years to realize he could do things for fun without trying or feeling pressured to win at them.

You can have something you enjoy doing and just do it even if youll never be professional. Its not time wasted in any way

If it's risking physical injury, I'd might not. But if it was fun and I enjoyed it, competing wouldn't mean anything to me.

I play video games and do outdoorsy stuff as main hobbies. I can't compete at multiplayer video games, but I like playing them still.
I'll never compete with trail runners that run up and down mountains. I'll never compare to thru hikers doing 25+ miles a day, but I'll plod along my 15 miles in my own time.

I recently took up guitar again after 16 years of not playing (not that I was any good in the first place).

I fully understand that I'll suck until one day I don't, and who knows how far away that is, but I'm in a different head space than I was as a teen. I'm not going to become a professional musician, but now I know I have to actually understand the basics and build on those.

I'm doing it for fun, and for a challenge to myself. Not to compare myself to others.

Very much agreed. If you're having fun, that's what matters.

I gave up on a number of hobbies after I realized it'd be impossible for me to succeed at them and grow.

no but it can be classified as an extreme sport as well. not as technical as skateboarding but can be just as demanding on the knees and lower back over time

Honestly those are the best hobbies.

Once you master something or gain a certain level of understanding it really loses it's luster.

Some hobbies are really difficult and most people stink at them, like golf.
