The scoring committee were underscoring her because she was so athletic that they didnt want to encourage other competitors to try and do what she can do for fear of increased injuries? Even that alone should be enough for her to want to drop out, let alone any mental anguish, whats the fuss about?

I think it's because overcoming nerves and adversity is considered part of sports. I feel like there's something more to the story that she's not disclosing though.

She was scoring full points ahead of her competitors in a sport where it's usually measured in tenths of a point. She's so much better than everyone else it's crazy

It's weird. They were underscoring her for doing skills that were so difficult that pretty much no one else could do them. They wanted to discourage other gymnasts from trying them because they might hurt themselves.

But... The fact that she can do them routinely is all the more reason to give her even higher scores.

So historically, what they do when someone is doing dangerous tricks is reduce the score. But then, if others start doing it regularly, and thus increasing the risk that someone's going to end up injured from it, they'll ban a move entirely. Since it's so much more difficult and worth less points, why would anyone attempt it?

That's the logic. Remember there's some degree of liability, if only financially, to prevent injuries or worse.

Remember that figure skating outright bans jumping directly towards your partner. You have to jump parallel to them, basically. Because if someone messes up, well now you have risks of injury and likely need to clean up the blood that's going to get all over the ice. Can skaters do it? In show (not competitive) stuff, sure. But it's dangerous and should never be attempted because the risk is nominally higher than similar techniques. Then there's that guy holding the girl by the ankles as he spins her up and down trick, at the speeds they turn it'll cause severe injury on the spot if any part of her head makes contact with the ice.

Is it messed up? Eh, maybe. Is it actually holding anyone back? Not really, not in most cases.

Been going on for decades in sports where an athlete is seen as "too athletic".

Take basketball - they got rid of the dunk in college because of Kareem. They allowed Shaq to be murdered on every fucking play.

It's almost as if they're trying to drag black athletes down. According to a friend.

I mean, a rule change, like the 5 yard rule in Football is one thing. That at least affects everyone equally (or should, some refs are still terrible/Corrupt). But in a singles competition where youre only targeting one person because shes too good its asinine. She worked her ass off to be that good. She deserves full respect for being that good. Essentially being graded on a scale and not doing as well as you should be just because others around you cant do what you do isnt fair at all. Its like, the literal point of the olympics is for the best of the best to stand up and show out, but stuff like this hinders that.

now add in the fact that womens gymnastics in the USA has always been a terribly run organization with abuse and assault, she had to endure all of that bull shit to get where she is and be as good as she is, and now people are telling her youre too good. Were going to essentially penalize you for itI completely understand where shes coming from. She owes the country nothing.
