Been hanging out on my front porch for the last couple weeks. It is generally only there in the morning when I leave for work, I think it hides during the day. It caught some prey in this photo.

Garden Spider

Yeah I was thinking Yellow Garden Spider when I did some research, but I thought it looked a little different from the pics I found online.

It's a decent size spider. It's also putting web up everywhere on my porch. I've walked into web when walking outside in the morning.

nice! are you in the western us? any chance of a photo from the other side?

i think it's in the genus neoscona, possibly neoscona oaxacaensis:

large, harmless orb weavers.

Awesome, thanks!

Yep, Southern California to be exact. Unfortunately likely can't get a good photo from the other side, there's a large bush in the way and I can't get very close.

I think it chills in the bush during the day. I noticed a strand of web going up toward the house so maybe it also chills in some crevice up there.

The only thing it does that I don't like is it puts strands of web right in the path between my front door and driveway. Hate walking through web.

yeah it's hiding in one or both of those spots. may make an eggsac if there's somewhere safe :D

How long do they live? I hope it stays safe, we have like 2 stray cats and three stray kittens that hang out in that bush. I don't think they'd mess with a spider though.
