I think it's the greatest game ever made because of its unparalleled movement, layers of strategy, fun engine, and a constantly upward skill ceiling. I also owe it for helping me meet some of the best people in my life.

Stronger than ever!

There are some things future Smash games would have trouble getting right, but if future games would just let movement be good on its own Melee would've died long ago. Like Ultimate could just implement momentum based jumps, dash dancing, cleaner platform drops - and it'd be MUCH better. Until a future Smash game lets the movement just work, viva la melee.

Also, almost every character in Melee feels good to play. From Marth and Fox to Pichu and Bowser, almost every character has something to make them fun. Ultimate really lacks that aspect, it's almost the opposite. I don't get why it's so hard to get EITHER Falcon or Jiggs anywhere close to being right, but only Melee (and 64, actually) do it.

Also, best online by far!

Great game, but the competitive scene with some characters (Puff, Yoshi, Marth) can make it a bore to watch. Every smash game has that I suppose though.

Yeah, if PM was the legit version we got when Brawl came out, Melee would've died. What I don't get is that Nintendo is very good at movement in all of their games, but they specifically nerf it for Smash just to not be like Melee. Every Smash game since Melee has gotten the movement better and better but they still artificially limit the movement for no reason.

I do think Ultimate Pichu and Bowser feel better than their Melee counterparts. It's one thing to be in Melee's engine but also it needs the right balance of reward for it to feel satisfying, and in Melee there's no reward to their chars other than the fact that they are low tier lol

It's the best smash game to watch. I like watching it over a lot of other games. GunZ is another good one to watch for me, but there aren't that many videos on it.

Meh labeling as weirdo competitive wavedasher is a little too much. Everyone has fun in different ways.

The problems I have with Ultimate are that some of the matchups are just incredibly grindy since there are a lot of campy chars and no real way to keep the momentum on (Snake, Duck Hunt, Young Link, Wii Fit, Pac Man, Villager, etc). Also playing offstage feels less dynamic, like everyone can recover way better so it doesn't feel tense when people are off stage. I also wish there was more reward for winning an interaction. In Melee, if you win one interaction you get to keep going, but in Ultimate, the game kind of makes you reset to nothing. Ultimately my main gripe is just movement. It feels clunky and doesn't feel natural. There's a buffer system where you can press buttons before things happen and then the game remembers and does them once it's able to. If any other game did this, like even Mario Odyssey, I'd have huge problems with it. C stick counts as [direction + A] in Ultimate whereas in Melee it just does the move. Meaning, if you jump with Ganon and do down C stick, in Melee, he'll rise while doing the stomp, but in Ultimate, he'll fall while doing the stomp since C stick is inputting down. In Melee, your dash is determined 1:1 by your analog stick, but in Ultimate, it's a set distance every time. These are just some examples and I don't feel like getting into other scenarios, but overall movement is very rigid and constrained comparatively. Not to mention just the general reward of getting a hit being different.

What makes Melee so fun is that your character does literally exactly what you do, like down to the analog stick angle, to how long you hold the button, to the frame, etc, and that there's no way to always do the right thing, you just have to adapt to the craziness and do what you think is best.

I think Ultimate is the next best official Smash, but it needs more, or rather, less restrictions on what you can do.

Also, even in competitive Melee, we still appreciate the random chaos of the Smash engine, expressing yourself in different and fun/cool ways and doing hype moves, and that it's all fun characters and stages and stuff. It's not one or the other, like either competitive or fun. It's both.

Walking home, and some guy bumps into me and instantly starts chatting shit to my face about marth being the best character. I tried to stay calm and explained to him that actually fox was the best character, but he wouldn't take a hint. He started throwing around words like 'f-smash' and I lost it. Punched him right in his marth loving face. I hate marth so much.

Games like Rivals have really good base movement but Melee's mechanics let you master some form of movement pretty much no matter what's going on.

Yeah that's a good point, there's a lot of fun single player content. And I also like that it's all short and sweet. Brawl's Subspace and Path of Light for Ultimate (or w/e it's called) is so grindy and soulless. Melee's adventure mode is pretty cool, like it's just inherently cool to be Samus and shooting missiles at Goombas. And idk why they took out individual target tests.

Though less expansive than Ultimate and Brawl, Melee's gameplay stands the test of time for being insanely fun, technical, and rewarding. I still play as often as I can and I can't wait for my locals to come back.

And in my opinion, the best smash game to play competitively.

Melee > Ult > PM/+ > 4

Never played 64 competitive but casual is fun.

it's objectively the deepest game in the series but I watch it way more than i play it tbh.

i'd really like the next smash game to incorporate more of the things that make melee so dynamic. it almost feels like with each smash game since brawl has been trying to have faster gameplay but with a more traditional "fighting game" combo system, which i think is a shame. melee's stronger emphasis on DI is one of the biggest reasons it's so interesting
