U.S. gymnastics superstar Simone Biles pulled out of the team finals Tuesday after an uncharacteristic balk on her vault. According to the live Peacock broadcast, Biles withdrawal was not due to a physical injury, but a mental issue she is having. One of Biles coaches told NBC that physically she is fine, but she is done for tonight. The four-time Olympic gold medalist was being attended to by a trainer and left the floor at Ariake Gymnastics Center and was replaced during the second apparatus rotation, the uneven bars, by reserve Jordan Chiles. Biles returned later to the floor sidelines wearing a Team USA warm-up suit to support her teammates. Biles, who made a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes on the floor exercise and vault in the qualifying round, scored a 13.766 on her vault Tuesday morning, opening up early out of a twist and taking a hop forward upon landing. Simone has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue, USA Gymnastics said in a statement. She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions.

The 24-year-old Biles led the all-around standings after the qualifying round on Sunday, but the heavily favored American team trailed the Russian Olympic Committee squad entering the finals. It wasnt an easy day or my best but I got through it, Biles wrote Monday in an Instagram post. I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times.

gymnastics has a really shitty culture surrounding it. that shit about the doctor that molested all those girls? stuff like that doesn't happen in a sport that doesn't already have a thousand other problems. kids involved get started at a stupid young age and pretty much indoctrinated into thinking gymnastics is life.

You can tell shes got a lot weighing down on her, her performance in the the team qualifiers was pretty bad (by her standards she was still first overall). Even back at the trials she was making multiple uncharacteristic mistakes, I wouldn't be surprised if she retired after the games.

This is what happens when a arrogant country and it's media weighs down it's top athletes with unrealistic expectations. When they even make second place seem like it's not adequate there is a huge problem. All of the athletes involved there are generally incredible, otherwise they wouldn't even be allowed to compete. When you consider that, it makes losses inevitable. There people who still go on to grief the athletes there despite that are absolute assholes.

Wouldn't be surprised if she calls it quits too, but then again if she does I doubt the media will ever let her live her life and move past it.

It stunts your growth. Severely. Also it's historically been linked to late starts to puberty (latter end of the normal range, granted, but still consistently the case among competitive gymnasts) and irregular periods. Basically, she'll probably have a hard time having kids if she wants any down the line.

Supposedly the greatest and yet she can't even get her ego under control, which ultimately sabotages her. It's a pretty sad way to go out. :( Unless she gets an anime friendship monologue that fixes everything, this just might be it for her.

Generally they retire by their early 20s, late 20s is super rare. 30s is nearly unheard of.

That sucks. She has so much pressure placed on her by stupid NBC commentators who are constantly going on about how she's infallible, she's the best, she can't lose, etc...

That on top of whatever internal bullshit she's had to put up with from get gymnastics team.

Hopefully she can get mentally well.

And they all kept saying it to her face too. She was interviewed the other day and the first thing they said to her was "you're the goat!!!" They asked her if she could be beaten and she was like "not really lol". Then all it took was a couple mis steps in qualifying and she got into her own head too much.

Nah, I'm not exactly buying the racism take with these particular olympics involving her. She generally does a amazing job, but she's been slipping up recently in Tokyo. She is bowing out because she may have injured herself and / or due to psychological issues due to the mistakes and pressure from the team, the media, the US and even herself. Hell the US probably knows it can't win this time against some of the competition so if our best steps down, they can use her abscence as a excuse for the loss and save face compared to if she stayed in, and they still lost.

Why does this surprise you? If you think about this logically, you can draw that conclusion that the smaller the mass of the athlete, the easier it is for her to stay balanced and centered, giving her more fluid movements when it comes to acceleration, propulsion, jumping, leaping and landing than someone who is taller giving a shorter person an actual competitive advantage over anyone taller than them.

It's like the rule in boxing where the longer the reach or your arm, the more you can work your opponent from outside his reach. In this case, instead of the reach of the arm, it's the ability to vertically not impose limitations that people taller than you would have to train harder to adjust their bodies to defy gravity.

I love the hypocrisy of people like you. She's literally the best athlete we have for that event and she was told that she would not be judged on her merits because the rest of the field might injure themselves trying to keep up. But it's somehow her fault? Get outta here.

Btw, that's not even a race thing. You brought that up. I hate self righteous people. She was unfairly singled out for being "too good" which should have instantly caused the US and other athletes to protest but that's a whole other issue.

This is the medias fault. I saw her perform and her floor dance was off, at one point she flew outta the stage and had to jump back on. Then she did the vault and it wasnt good, the media stressed her out and that stress led to her not being at her best.

i understand why she dropped out.

Wow. Some of the hot takes on here are so wild.

So much pressure on her. A few of them have mentioned how much harder these Olympics are without their family and friends being around. It seemed like she was in her head too much during qualifying.

She bailed out of the vault that she did do before she backed out. Seemed almost like she recognized she didnt have it and didnt want to fail in front of the world. Say what you want about backing out at this point but its a wild thing to see happen. I hope it doesnt ruin her going forward in life.
