Remember the first time you cheated? From extra lives, stage select, hidden characters, hidden weapons, super powers, big heads, alternative costumes, secret hidden games from the past, art concepts and even background music select screens, there was a cheat for anything and everything! Any game worth it's grit had at least a few hidden developer codes built into them. Other ways to enter a cheat code was to pick up a Game Genie or a Game Shark to hack your games with outside source codes to give you that extra advantage. Do you remember the first time you cheated for a game and which game it was?

It was some code of Arcade or Genesis or SNES. I'm sure of this.

I think my first "real cheat" was just the stage select codes for Mega Man 2, but realistically, I didn't start using cheat codes until probably Mortal Kombat 3

I believe my first was for invincibility in Abe's Exoddus. I haven't played it for 20 years, but off the top of my head, I think it was Circle, Triangle, Square, X, Down, Down, Down, Circle, Triangle, Square, X. Whilst holding the triggers.

Tips and Tricks magazine used to put out a Summer Edition code book for every system from NES until Playstation and every year after that they'd update the list by adding the new consoles (PS2, PSP, Dreamcast, etc).

I used to pick out what games I rented based off of how many cheat codes or secrets this magazine had listed for it. Some games had entire pages dedicated to the amount of cheat codes they had (Smackdown 2, Mortal Kombat 3, NFL Blitz, and Gauntlet Dark Legacy had tons of cheats, for example)

probably one of the cheats in age of empires 1. dunno which, but there's a handful of cheats that spawn strange overpowered units that I remember messing around a ton with as a kid

Oh jeez, I could do a whole 'nother topic on those old 1-900 tip and codes phone numbers...

Let's just say I ran a $250 phone bill just for pokemon Red back in 1997.....Even the person on the phone (who recognized I was a kid using his parent's phone bill for tips, even told me after like 25 minutes on one call, he was like "you DO know how much we charge for these calls, right?" I was like "oh yeah, it's nothing .99 cents a minute".....yeah that adds up.
