oh, if we're thinking outside the box of videogames here, then definitely MTG as well
Honestly, I'd argue this. The only reason MTG is so good is because it's been around longer than literally any active game and so there's so much variety. If we're talking about stuff they're actively putting out, others are doing it better.

So I went and double-checked, and in zero 1 maintaining s rank just causes all the bosses to use a special s rank attack against you. If you can beat the whole game with s rank you get a special cyber elf that, if leveled up all the way, gives you a move that grants you temporary invincibility.

It isn't until the later games that you start getting actual rewards.
Ooooooh ok then

FFT was genre defining but I'd say the new X-com games are probably just as good or better.

For single player FPS games Farcry 2 had some really excellent immersive stuff that hasn't been topped since, I'll concede it had some game breaking problems too though.

Eternal Darkness on the gamecube.

I haven't played Zero yet either, at least not to such a serious degree. I gave it a try as a teenager but I didn't take to it.

Once I finish the X series I'm thinking of getting the Z legacy collection, though. From what I hear though, the original Z game is incredibly unforgiving and kind of obtuse with its checkpoints, saving and mechanics. But that's neither here nor there.

You will be fine in the legacy collection. You can play the Zero games with added checkpoints.

To me it's pound for pound the best. It isnt the most amazing but its the only one i cant make a valid complaint about something in it gameplay/mechanics wise. Well 5 I can't really either but 4 at least had a ok story too.

Yeah I meant to say that in my initial post. Specifically the war of lions version. Only game of that genre to top tactics is tactics itself with added content like animated cutscenes
This.
Also, Tactics also has a ton of really great mods, 1.3 (the easy version, still haven't been able to get through the official 1.3 difficulty...) is arguably the most well balanced version of the game as it takes everything broken and unbreaks it, takes all the job abilities that become underwhelming over time and enhances them, then turns around and gives all the boss characters even more broken abilities and adds a shit ton of secret variant random battles that actually make you utilize a well built endgame team to have a chance.

Radiant Historia is the closest thing we've gotten to a Chrono Trigger spiritual successor, and I would argue that it handled the time travel aspect in a much more rewarding fashion. It treated it not as a linear aspect of fate, but a series of logic gates that you choose to alter outcomes.

I dunno I loved the whole idea of recruiting for your party then losing them all and having to find them all again with no restrictions on where you were allowed to go. It's the direction mass effect 2 was going in until the game just suddenly ended for no reason.

Metroid Prime.

Other than its sequels, there just hasn't been anything like it, let alone something that topped it.
It's probably a high ask, but with how long we've been waiting for Prime 4, I hope the wait is worth it and either rivals or tops the original game.

Palom/Porom being stuck in petrification and unrestorable because they cast it on themselves, then suddenly being restored by the Elder at the end of the game is absolutely and inarguably a plot hole. So is Cid and Yang jumping in giant explosions and ending up being sick in bed.

The plot was not well written.

DC2 is literally the definition of a game that has been topped. Almost every modern game has better combat, better dungeon exploring, and better base building if it focuses on any of these things.\

DC2 was great for the time.

Those aint plot holes. That's dues ex machina shit which can be a valid complaint but it ain't a plot hole.

Those surviving explosions suddenly its apparent ffv characters are more resilient than we originally believed. The twins it simply was just soft that couldn't revive them all along.

Plot holes are when shit literally is contradicting an already established thing. Afaik. Deus ex machina afaik is when a story teller pulls some shit out of his ass to explain away something that shouldn't have been or extremely unlikely to be the case.

But yeah I just take cid and yang of being cases of they where much more resilient than we originally imagined. I mean we had no reason to believe cloud should have survived his early game fall at that point but he did and we all accepted it

It was a old school game I dont take shit like that seriously. I mean final fantasy 2 had the villain come back from death even more powerful before with little in game explanation. Everyone claims sabin can suplex a train when thats more a gameplay mechanics but fanboys take it as canon. Final fantasy is full of unrealistic things

Chrono Trigger and Fallout: New Vegas are obvious ones.

Star Ocean: The Second Story has honestly never been topped for me, but I'm not sure exactly what other games fall into the same category. All the other games started focusing more on combat, and less on the PA's and Skill/Item Creation system that they're practically in a different genre.
