I know the reasons that are typically given (omg budgets and doing graphics and stuff) but it just doesnt add up to me. Part of me thinks that its just the sheer size of game development teams, these things are functioning like large corporations where the Pareto principle applies. SNES/N64 games were just programmed by like 1-3 Nerds working around the clock but it takes a bit more than that for newer games sooooo it becomes unmanageable basically imo. This is just my opinion as an Engineer.
tl;dr there are large teams of people doing nothing because theyre hired by clueless managers and managed terribly and nobody cares.
Discuss.

I remember reading something like the cost of the player character model and etc for 3D games nowadays being more than the entire development cost of most NES/SNES era games, though I have no idea how to verify this

also I think your staff count on older games is a little off, it's not quite that low but it's definitely lower than nowadays. but also it's not like output scales directly with team size; a 50 person team is not 50x as productive as a 1 person team because of effort wasted in organizational overhead

sounds about right, the thing is is that its ALL WASTE imho. Theres just no payoff for all the effort when you consider the short af development times for games like, say, FF7 thru FF10 imo
