in portal 1 there is some hilarious writing but it's usually much more wrangled into the background...things glados says that 2 seconds later you pause and go "wait...wtf?" but it still at least pretends to be a serious sci-fi situation. I actually think it makes the jokes more effective because the jokes come from the computer's inability to understand humans and from satire of corporate culture and unsafe workspaces.

Portal 2 feels like a nickelodeon cartoon from the very start when wheatley (a bumbling almost entirely comedic character) wakes you.

Portal 2 in the first 5 minutes: "if the earth is currently governed by a manner of animal-king, sentient-cloud, or other governing body that either refuses to or is incapable of listening to reason, th- [recording shorts out]" *while a cartoon plays of people bowing down to a giant turret*

Aside from just a few key moments of Portal 2, that silliness stays in the foreground the whole time. I think it's still a good game but the writing just isn't as sharp as before.

Its way better than the first game. Its my second favorite game ever. I think I've replayed it more than any other game lol

On the other hand, Portal 2 is a complete game and not an elaborate tech demo you can beat in an hour and in which you spend 3/4 of that in boring, sterile test chambers.

That's true...I'd say you spend about half the time in the test chambers and the other half escaping.

Personally I still think Portal is a perfect experience and a perfect game although it doesn't lend itself well to replaying because the first half is a tutorial and the second half is so short. I like the gels introduced in Portal 2

Portal 1 is succint. Much less fat to trim around than Portal 2.
