It's not the requirement of a photo ID in a vacuum. It's that requirement alongside various policies and practices that put barriers in the way of certain groups of people obtaining IDs. In particular, if it's not possible to readily obtain a photo ID at no expense, this is a de facto poll tax and clearly unconstitutional.

Republicans wouldn't give a damn about "voter integrity" if they were winning and there was no looming demographic change.

In some states like my home state of Texas, you can use your gun license to vote but not a student ID. Hmm...

And it's always interesting how DMV locations are getting shut down or are severely understaffed in majority black areas.

That's fine, TC. Just make photo ID free, don't shut down any DMVs, open more for convenience and to eliminate wait time, expand voting to multiple days, and put no restrictions on mail-in voting. Start research on online voting.

I have absolutely no problem with IDs and I bet you wouldn't find many people who are arguing that IDs shouldn't exist. They're just against Republicans instituting a poll tax and deliberately making it harder for people to obtain IDs or vote. They know exactly what they are doing when they shut down DMVs and polling places. It's voter suppression that they will expand if given a chance. You're falling for it.

I very much understand the plan.

The plan is to put up more barrier to voting to reduce total turnout with the measures used designed to affect non-republican voters more in order to tilt things in Republican favor.

This. Alabama passed a voter ID law a few years back after the supreme court gutting the voting rights act. The first thing they did after it passed was close all the License offices in the poor and black areas despite having the previous year passed a bond issue to fund those very same license offices. It's never been about protecting from fraud. Not once. It's about preventing people who don't vote for them from voting at all. TC knows this. He's just a fucking intellectually dishonest person.

Also even without voter ID, DMVs should be open till midnight. Never understood the DMV hours when most people work then.

DMV hours are another example of a subtle barrier. The less wealth you have and the less stable your employment is, the harder it is for you to take time away from normal work hours to visit the DMV. Rich office worker? Just let your boss know you'll be in a little late on Tuesday (or whatever). You might not even have to mark it as time off if you're salaried and/or can just stay late that day or another day that week. Poor worker in the service industry? Good luck not getting fired. edit: oh, and even if you have a sympathetic boss and can arrange a half day off or whatnot, can you actually afford the lost income?

I feel like this Simpson's Episode represents my sentiments here.
"I recognize the closure of the 31 driver's license offices affects mostly rural areas of the state," Bentley said. "To suggest the closure of the driver's license offices is a racial issue is simply not true, and to suggest otherwise should be considered an effort to promote a political agenda."

The affected offices issued or renewed less than 9,000 driver's licenses and identification cards in 2014; the counties had just over 551,000 active or inactive voters that year. The number represented less than one-half of one percent of the voting population.

ALEA said an $11 million cut to its budget, combined with staffing shortages in its district offices, required the removal of the part-time examiners. Both Bentley and ALEA have criticized the Legislature for not approving a budget adequate for state services. Legislators, in turn, have said ALEA could have used an increase in driver's license fees -- worth $12 million -- to alleviate the reductions. ALEA says that money offsets losses on manufacturing driver's licenses.

OP, are you aware that the bulk of voting law criticisms are not photo IDs, but the fact that Republican-led governments have increasingly performed poll closures since parts of the VRA were struck down in the mid-2010s, causing massive lines in urban counties that skew democratic?

Did you know none of the laws being proposed to "secure" the vote address this issue, and in fact worsen it?
