I feel like people don't talk about how AMAZING they thought Japan was. Has the hype settled?

What county is trending these days? I feel like Korea is getting a bigger spotlight.

I think Covid killed Japan's dream of hosting the Olympics.

They're still going through with it despite knowing that it's going to be a shit show.

Nah. Japanese electronics sell incredibly well and their media is consumed heavily by young male foreigners. It's not so much that Japan has lost much of it's popularity as much as certain demographics of people who largely populate certain nations have become more pessimistic and xenophobic thanks to hate speech from certain individuals and groups. The main thing people talk about internationally when it comes Korea is Kpop artists / groups and that's about it.

I think the reality of Japan set in for lots of folks instead of the weird view of it being some sort of nerd paradise

Okay. Not trying to defend them in the slightest, but is it also their fault for the unusually high amount of African Americans targeting Asian Americans due to the false belief that Covid19 and it's spread has something to do with them? This is something I'm still having a hard time wrapping my mind around.

This. The company and employers you work for and the coworkers you work along side are essentially your second family. It's almost like they own you on and even off the clock as long as you are employed by them. School and your success in it is pretty much just to help determine and prepare you for your future career opportunities.

I went to Japan. I had a good time. Went bar hopping, went to lots of great restaurants and convience stores, even a maid cafe.

Dunno if I'd want to live there though

Japan is the ultimate escapism

In a way it is, but that's mostly due to their entertainment industry and media, and that is only because they have to use it as a outlet for a lot of their creativity and expression, because IRL most of that goes against their societal traditions and most people doing such things would likely be scrutinized and treated like pariahs. Only the rich and privileged can stand against the norm and possibly not be hindered by it which also applies to other countries.

I find Japan fascinating for its traditional cultural strains. Not their modern outputs of electronics/media. Although it seems like their traditional stuff is largely dying, sadly.

They have to - insurance companies don't pay out on force majeure, which Covid falls under (although some companies put it under 'Act of God', which is very similar and still means insurance is not able to be claimed).

Ergo, Japan will lose everything should they cancel - due to litigation from sponsors et al - without being able to recoup anything. This is pretty much a firefighting effort for them atm and they're doing their best to prevent their country from being economocally crippled whilst still trying to minimise the health risks posed.
