Yeah, this. Why would someone hate newgame+?

I guess, stuff that can only be done in newgame+ is a legitimate complaint, though.

Stealth in general. I just don't have the patience to slink around and bide my time waiting for a guard to piss off to go from a to b.

QTE's during cutscenes. I'm not a massive fan of QTE's in general but I think they can have their place in the right games. QTE's which appear halfway through a cut-scene that's gone on for enough time to make you think it's okay to rest your hands for a bit though should never exist. Especially when it's a post-boss cut scene and there's not even the slightest indication a QTE is coming up.

Not really a mechanic per se, but games where you're forced to play the introduction/prologue before you can access the options menu irritate the hell out of me too.

Stealth is a good pick. It's so trash in every game

Woops they saw me. Better just hide for 5 seconds then they'll completely forget about me

I'm making tons of noise but they don't care because they can't see me

I'm walking right next to them but they only have a 30 degree cone of vision so ha ha

They see I've killed like half their guards but they will stay on the same predetermined route

I can silent take down every enemy just by choking them. Somehow

It's the worst

Time-based restrictions, especially when the enemies fucking timer scam by stunning you/spam heals (Im looking at you Alchemy Stars)

Having to get all 3 star conditions at once instead of being able to get 2 of them, then going back and getting the third (fucking Alchemy Stars)

The previously mentioned reinforcements that can move and attack on the same turn they arrive

The AI reading inputs in fighting games

Forcing you to use certain party members by either making it so you cant use some guys or flat out making it a fixed party. This is made a million times worse when they dont even make the levels fixed, so you have to level up some loser(s) that youll never use again >:(

I like it when games throw in twists like that

A good example would be Hyrule Warriors, where towards the end of the story you play as Ganondorf, beat Link/Zelda/Lana and take the Triforce from them.

That's much better than the lame "you won the fight, but you still lost" copout

That reminds me of Redout's medal system; whatever you got in your most recent race counts as what medal you have for that event. Say you're going for a particular achievement and are just repeating one track/event to get it: You might get a platinum medal on your first attempt but not get the achievement, so you try again. This time you get the achievement but don't manage to get a medal. It now shows your best as the second time with no medal won, completely wiping the platinum medal and time/score.

The tailing and eavesdropping missions from the Assassins Creed series. Both are "insta-fail if spotted" type missions, and eavesdropping is even worse because you have to stay close to someone on top of all that. The worst ones were in IV, not just because everything else was great, but it was also incredibly far removed from the awesome sailing. Thankfully they've done away with those kinds of missions. Death is pretty much the only way to get a game over now, along with killing civilians.

Having to hold down a button to do a basic action, even if it is only half a second (picking up items in Mad Max and Mafia III). There is literally no reason a single button press wouldn't suffice, especially since the hold time is small enough to be a press, anyway. I mean, am I going to change my mind and be like, "actually, I don't want this item that has no downsides to taking it and having large quantities"?

The stupid "realistic outdoor/indoor lighting" thing where going in a building from the outside makes the inside darker for a moment before it adjusts to be normal, while exiting makes the outside bright for a moment.

Making fake difficulty by taking away all your awesome stuff. The colosseum fight from Dying Light is my personal example. And Undermine, a roguelike game, makes you fight the final boss from the main lobby, where your fresh character that just entered doesn't have any items aside from the permanent stat upgrades. Best you can hope for is that the lobby shop sells something decent so you have a better chance to survive long enough to get better items during the battle.

Any time you have a limited time to loot an area before you have to leave stuff behind or die.

Content that is locked behind you doing well at a mini-game that plays drastically differently from the main game (Yakuza and all its gambling and rhythm games).

Real-world timers, quintupally so if it's just to push microtransactions.

Equipment that's only worth a damn if you never, ever get hit.

Being unable to 100% complete a game if you didn't do something during the main story (the Strong Bad games are extremely guilty of this).

And while this isn't a mechanic, it really annoys me when developers quickly patch out beneficial bugs/exploits, but leave bad ones alone. Like GTAV removing underwater money suitcases from single-player mode, or Assassins Creed Valhalla destroying spear fishing by making the fish flee earlier and faster. Spear fishing was the only reliable source of income before the first expansion came out, and even that wasn't all that lucrative.

This is some of the worst things to happen to modern gaming. "You can only get ___ once per day!" or some garbage. At least with certain systems you can 'time-travel' by changing the clock, but it's still an annoyance.

  • Invisible walls. I can clearly see that this section of rock is easily scalable, but I must instead walk alllllllll the way around to get to the place that's 6 feet above where I am now?
