I ordered a social security card from the social security administration. The one I have is super old and the letters are blurred and faded.

I have the informed delivery service with USPS so I get an email with the mail I'm supposed to receive that day. On June 21st, I got a picture of the mail my social security card would be in along with 3 other pieces of mail.

I got everything except for the social security card. I went to the post office. They don't have it. They told me to check the box that says I didn't receive the mail. I did that. They said someone would reach out to me. If course, no one did.

I called and had them open a ticket. They closed the ticket without contacting me and they asked me to do a survey, lol.

I called for an update and they escalated the case because they couldn't explain why no one contacted me. I called the best day and they said there's is nothing they can do because it doesn't have a tracking number.

So I gave up on that card and called the social security administration to see if I could just pick one up. They made an appointment for me and told me to go to a certain office.

I showed up to the appointment and they said I couldn't pick one up there and had me fill out a form that I could fill out online. Sigh. Fine. Did that.

Got the picture in the email saying I should get the second social security card. Same thing. Got everything but the social security card.

They don't know where the damn thing is.

So now I have a personal number of the district manager of the USPS plant that I can't go to to see if someone can find it there.

This sucks

Damn, sounds like some at your local USPS is doing identity theft. I would escalate and also get them to pay for your credit monitoring. You should also probably lock your credit too.

Also informed delivery isn't always accurate. I've had it tell me mail I'm suppose to be getting but ended up getting them days or weeks later. I think sometimes the carrier mess up in sorting before their route and it results in longer processing. But if it's happened twice with the same piece of mail for you, that's very weird.

Contact the police. You have proof that two versions of your social security card were supposedly put in your mailbox. This could be an identity theft thing. Willing to bet something happens if the police step in.

I agree in a sense, but really what else is there?

Also they shouldn't be labeling shit like that on the envelopes to begin with. It's not supposed to be easy for USPS grunt to see "hmm social security envelope with important documents enclosed, I should snag this!"

It's why replacement credit/debit cards come in plain white envelopes with basically no info on them other than a return address that doesn't even say "bank" half the time.

Like daynlokki said, I don't see any reason why you couldn't pick up at the SSA. Just doing a quick maps check, there's 6 offices within 50 miles of me. I can't imagine it would be difficult to find a location unless you lived in the middle of Montana or Nevada or something.

They weren't put in my mailbox. USPS has an informed delivery service where they take a picture of pieces of mail and email you to let you know what mail you should receive that day or within the next couple days.

I have proof that the USPS plant either in Dallas or San Antonio received them.

As I said, this isn't really a mystery when you think about the safety concerns. IIRC, TC posted somewhere that he recently moved.

If you're forwarding or even at a new address, the USPS database is probably showing the old residents. You just haven't lived there long enough to be receiving something that sensitive.

So for safety, it's auto returned and then destroyed. This happens with licenses, passports and any other sensitive documents from the government. You're never notified and lots of people have no idea because not many people have that coincide in that way and it's not like that in every single jurisdiction or agency.

The mail has the correct address on it, so it's not a matter of mail getting sent to the wrong address. I've received a replacement driver's license recently.

Yes, the correct address would still get flagged because you just haven't been there long enough.

Think about it. Any identity thief could have just requested the card to a new address. They don't actually know you requested it.

Also, I'm not sure how USPS and the Social Security Administration wouldn't know that I actually requested it at this address.
  • Attempt 1: Logged into my account online, answered security questions, and filled out the form to get a replacement correctly.
  • Attempt 2: Showed up in person at the nearest Social Security Administration office and filled out a paper form there after showing them my ID.

I've also been to the USPS office multiple times because this is their 3rd time losing mail for this address.

I clearly said in my post that it can depend on jurisdiction or agency and licenses are issued by the state, while social security is federal. So not sure what point you're making.

You clearly just moved. It's a simple security thing, especially since SS cards are way more important than your license.

That's just not how it works.

Mail is sent. Filter picks it up. Returns it.

I explained a reason why they do it. Because the system doesn't know who could have requested it.

Just because in this instance you met them personally, doesn't mean the fucking system knows that.

You're being really defensive for no reason.

I'm not sure on the specifics of the Texas penal code sections, but if you involve the police I recommend hiring an attorney before doing so. At this point, it sounds like a civil matter, in which case you can request attorney's fees.

That all seems a bit drastic with what we know now though. Hope it works out for you.

USPS hasn't told you jack shit because they're all low level employees and you just said you haven't spoken to any higher ups.

Speak to them on Monday before you start celebrating. Reading back your replies in this thread, I have no idea why you had that weird ass meltdown or why you're so defensive. If someone gave me advice, I'd be like "alright, I'll check that angle, thanks", instead of throwing a fit.
