Weird question, but I can give examples.

I was newly hired at a company, but I worked at their competitor before. My manager asked me how I liked the job compared to the previous. I, of course, lied and said I liked my job now more and exaggerated a bunch of problems I had at my previous job.

A few weeks later, he announced his resignation. He took the department out for lunch and we learned he'd be going to another state to work in the same industry. That's when it occured to me, he was asking me about my previous company because he had planned to apply there. Instead, he took me at my word, didn't bother applying, and moved his whole family to another state.

He's much happier now, last we spoke, so maybe it all turned out for the best.
