It's like changing your name from John to Frank - even though you wanted to be called Frank, you've been called John for your entire life and it's going to be an adjustment to answer to Frank. Some people know you as John, and they themselves are going to have to get used to you being Frank now - but it's a learning curve for everyone involved, and as long as no-one is being a prick about it, it's okay to be open and gracious about it. That doesn't mean that because he still uses John sometimes, John is John whether he wants to be called Frank or not. It just means that the process of getting used to being Frank isn't an overnight process, not even for the guy who changed his name from John to Frank. --- But I don't have to make this mistake, and I don't have to stay this way. That does mean that occasionally there will be people hit for slip-ups or because they didn't read the whole topic but the alternative is that people would be dilberately misgendering people and then claiming they didn't know or read the earlier topic.
