I played and beat Joe & Mac for Super Nintendo. The second boss is totally Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors. Laying close beside the SNES console was a copy of an NES game, Monster Party, with another Audrey II prominently featured on the cover. And the carnivorous plant in question was also the direct inspiration for the piranha plants from the Super Mario series.

It got me thinking. What movie had the biggest impact on gaming? For my money, it has to be Alien. In addition to directly influencing classics like Metroid and Contra, it also spawned countless imposters. Xenophobe, Alien Storm, even the Animaniacs game for SNES had its own version of the xenomorph.

The beat 'em up genre was more or less patterned after The Warriors. Right down to the tradition that nobody in the game has a gun except the final bad guy.

Is there anything that can top Alien for sheer influence in gaming?

Night of the Living Dead definitely had an influence on (realistic) zombie portrayals in games. The Terminator as well. I'd forgotten just how many robot skeletons there are.

Mario literally only exists because Nintendo lost the rights to Popeye.

Mario also owes something to King Kong. Its the original gaming hodgepodge.

Early robot enemies were a matter of convenience WRT violence in children's entertainment. The movie itself doesn't have much influence in other video games. Star Wars was probably a bigger influence there.

Mario also owes something to King Kong. Its the original gaming hodgepodge.

There's a scene in the 1976 remake where Kong gets burned by a flamethrower and responds by throwing throwing barrels at his attacker.

Donkey Kong is absolutely inspired by King Kong as a character, but I wonder whether or not that scene from the remake had any influence on the game or if it's just a coincidence.

Came in to say Alien/Aliens. In addition to the games already mentioned in this topic influenced by those movies, the Resident Evil series owes a lot to them as well.

Maybe Conan, but Id say more the original stories than the movie really. Basically started sword and sorcery. But Im sure most people saw the movies before they read any Robert e Howard.

A couple of side notes here

  1. The piranha plant from Super Mario Bros. was not inspired by Little Shop of Horrors. (Unless it borrowed from the original. I never saw that version.) Super Mario Bros. was 1985 and Little Shop of Horrors was 1986. The timeline doesn't match up. The singing piranha plants from the Japanese commercial for Super Mario RPG were definitely inspired by it though.
  2. I'd completely forgotten bout the classic monster movies like Dracula and Frankenstein. Frankenstein (1931) might have an even greater influence on gaming than the Alien franchise.
Variations of the Universal version of the Frankenstein monster are among the most common stock enemies in gaming.
