I'm convinced some captain somewhere thought it was a good idea to prank the new recruits and everyone just ran with it. And now its too late, the train has left the station and it can't be stopped. Like yeah, I know its going to freaking hurt. I don't have to stick my hand in fire to know its going to burn me. Do they also shoot those "rubber" bullets at each other? Whats next? Getting shot with your vest on? But oh that side arm you have; go ahead and use that indiscriminately.

I think it's good to understand what it is you're doing to other people so you have more of a chance to feel compassion before opting into doing it to them.

I understand that this is the main reason they give for doing this, but when you also carry a sidearm or rifle it kind of defeats this sentiment. Maybe it's just me but I don't get why anyone would volunteer to do it.

You use a gun in a life or death scenario but a tazer is much different and can often be avoided

And yet they hardly use it and in the off chance they do, they confuse it for their gun and shoot you anyway.

having gone through the academy, this is what we were told.

we had to get pepper sprayed too, because whenever you use it, youre almost always going to get hit too

What? Police use tasers far more than they use their guns. Despite the growing number of incidents involving police shooting unarmed civilians, there are still hundreds, if not thousands of officers that go their entire career without ever using their gun, outside of the range.

So, yes I think the practice of showing officers what it feels like to get tased is a good one. It might make some officers more hesitant, even if it's not lethal.
