I full expect a speed up for automation in these jobs as a result of this.

maybe, but there is a disconnect between the customers, the store, and the people developing it. automation will be profitable for very large companies, but many still won't invest in it because the more expedient thing will still be to underpay workers. many are franchised and won't be close to wanting to pay for it. and forget about smaller chains.

then there is Amazon who is actually developing the tech to pull it off but people won't want to shop there en masse. they aren't used to it and won't trust it. Amazon is smart enough to know this and won't post up in bumfuck towns where the people will still shop at dollar general or Wal-mart.

so there's going to be a large swath of businesses that cave. just watch.

This question shows your lack of understanding on this issue. It has nothing to with whether one wants to work or not.

No.

For one, the unemployment rate isn't that bad all things considered.

Also, a wage increase doesn't solve the problem of unreasonable and sometimes abusive customers, nor does it suddenly prove regular and stable hours.

People apply and get hired, but corporate wont put anything more than a skeleton crew on the floor because they have to spend more.

This trend isnt going to end until people stop blaming the workers and start blaming the corporate executives who keep the money and refuse to have a full staff in the store.
it's easier to blame the worker instead of the untouchable corporation, like exploration is more or less acceptable by the public as long as you use kind words for it and there's always the "Well you aren't forced to work for them" logic

idk if it will continue to climb but they're pretty unstoppable as a business model, at least for the foreseeable future.

Also a little old, but absolutely still applicable and addresses money saved from less turnover:

https://archive.thinkprogress.org/this-is-how-much-a-big-mac-would-cost-if-the-minimum-wage-was-15-184b7523b273/

TLDR, price increases wouldn't be noticable by the average consumer

Ehh...I feel like Pandora's Box has kinda been opened.

A lot of people realized just how little they're getting paid for what they have to put up with. A lot of people realized they don't HAVE to commute an hour away to the office now that we know working from home is a viable alternative for many jobs. A lot of people decided to take Republicans' "advice" and used their time to learn new skills or pick up new hobbies that they can utilize for an actual career. And a lot of people at least dipped their toes into starting their own business because with how dire the job situation became over the last year, they really didn't have much else to lose.

Will things return back to how they were pre-pandemic? Maybe. But I do know that the pandemic made it a lot easier for people to smell bullshit.

EDIT: What I will say on a personal note is that after getting laid off earlier this year from my retail job that I'd been at for 3 years, I was completely done with those kinds of jobs. So instead of looking for more deadend employment that would get me nowhere, I chose to use my time to study for my A+ cert and just enjoy my free time. Now I'm set to start a new Work from Home job next month doing Tech Support.

as you move up in work experience your pay will increase too, and the idea is to keep moving up the ladder so it scales with inflation too. and buy assets as much as possible, including stock & crypto imo

wages in general need to be higher tho, but i think we're seeing progress due to employment shortage

yeah i think these things are good though, they're an improvement in the paradigm. it's mostly boomer-type managers who really still care about the old way. but they are losing their power.

because of Doomers, people fail to see how close we are to seeing a Star Trek economy emerge

like if child tax credits every month become permanent and we have this unemployment extended permanently and get free or affordable college and good healthcarewe will have made it

throw in the Green New Deal for more infrastructure spending and we can solve climate change still in our lifetime

what would happen if media was more positive/optimistic about this? I reckon theyd get less ad revenue since fear sells more :/

yeah something about unemployment, increased credits, and ubi light actually working and the world not ending because of it (and record corporate profits to boot) has forced Republicans to pull the mask off and go straight for throttling democracy since they've been proven liars.

yep. once GND is a thing and everyone sees the rocket fuel for the economy theyre gonna want more. I think well see huge gains in household wealth across the board over the next 10 years as a result, just a matter of time for them to do it.

Bidens first infrastructure bills are a good start and those look like theyre gonna actually be a thing now

edit: the tankies on the left too, theyre also afraid of climate change being solvable without resorting to totalitarian control of economy like in the Soviet Union

TC has responded to others since this post, but not this one. I would like some clarification. If I am incorrect, I will apologize.

The thread was so tone deaf, it stuck in my mind.

Don't worry TC, those stores will go out of business. This will solve the issue, you don't need employees if you don't have a store.

I mean. how else are they gonna make a living?

If the only job a guy can get is Dennys or Target would you choose nothing and be unemployed and have no money coming in over working?

Because the money being brought in isn't a living. It's virtually useless when it doesn't afford anything someone actually needs to survive.

There's literally people out there with jobs that are also homeless and bringing in food stamps, that's how fucking awful wages are these days at some jobs that you can't even buy food or shelter with it.

So again, "why bother" with those jobs?
