He was my best friend in high school, although I havent seen him in 10 years. His wife warned me that he might not chat much or be quite sleepy.

I wasn't quite prepared for it. They'd cut out most of the part of his brain that handles communication. He could only nod slightly, but im not even sure if he was there. He was completely unable to talk, could just sip tea quietly and then got bored of trying to follow the conversation and turned on the TV.

Amazing woman. Can't imagine living with that every day. And christ I hope he's not just in there suffering every day and just unable to express his feelings :(

Was there any realistic hope that he could relearn his communication skills with time?

I can empathize. Lost one of my best friends from childhood to something very similar about 1 year 2 months ago. Too young.

Oh damn. Do you know how it was eventually caught? Were there any warning signs that the wife thinks (in retrospect) may have been ignored or brushed off?

I can't remember the specifics but I think it started with chronic headaches that was misdiagnosed as migraines, which then developed into seizures.

Yesterday was weird.
