Some people disagree with me and say no people love to work but. I think majority of people just want money and they dont like their actual jobs

Which is why it surprises me that some people look down on others who take a week off work just because

And honestly, I dont even mind working under the right circumstances (job not too shitty, not too far away from where I live, pays well enough, etc.) but if someone said to me hey, heres enough money so that you never have to work again you can be damn sure that Id take that offer.

Eight years ago, I had to get an operation that was going to put me out of work for 7 - 8 weeks. SO many people were like oh man youre gonna be so bored, youll be counting down the days till you can come back to work etc. and let me tell you there was not a single second that I didnt enjoy not having to go to work that made me say gee, you know what Id rather be doing? Working

To be fair, I utterly despised my job back then. I mean, I already didnt love it (shitty retail grocery job) but around that time we were going through management changes and I was being pushed super hard (which is what led to my injury which is probably what made me even happier to not be at that shithole). Then about a year later I was out for three months because of a back issue, and, again, despite the pain, I was still just happy to not be wasting my life away working.

But even now that I have a good job, Id still SO much rather be chilling at home, seeing friends, going out doing stuff, etc. than going to work. I understand everyone needs to work, and of course Ill continue to do so and do the best job I can. But I dont define myself by my job. I would stop working if I could without question. But at this point Id definitely settle for a shorter week or shorter days

D. I'm encountering a number of people out here that would still kome to work even if they won the lottery. Some feel they require a purpose, passion or not. Some just wanna be social. Some have no idea what they'd do with their time without the 9-5 and that scares them. All of them depress me.

Confirm.

If I won the lottery I would never work again. And I'm sure most people are like that.

It's healthy to have a purpose to furfill everyday when you wake up. A lot of people struggle to find that purpose outside of their work. Studies have shown people who retire earlier tend to die earlier as well

D. I'd still feel fundamentally alienated from my labor, in fact I might even feel worse. Imagine having passion about something, and having to do it as a job for someone else. Your passion will get sucked right the fuck out of you and then what the fuck are you left with? I'd rather do the things I love in spite of work, rather than as work. That, I could be passionate about.

I agree, my hobbies are my passions. My work is how I make a living.

Not to say you should do something that makes you miserable. But I always found the notion you should do what you love as job to be kind of dumb. You should do something you can somewhat enjoy that enables you to have the resources and time to do what you love.

Deny - I know a lot of people who just have to keep themselves busy. Despite not actually needing the money, my Aunt is still working at Boots at the age of 79 and my Mum's ex-boyfriend is still working as a Postman at 78. Their generation does have a much more dedicated work ethic in general though - most of the Men were in full-time employment at 14 to help pay the bills, so it just seems natural to them.

That generation also probably made a better living (with wages adjusted for between now and then of course) and it was actually more worth their time to work.

Idk my dad retired 2 months ago and is now hopelessly depressed and bored. In guess that's more on him for not having any hobbies or plans post retirement tho.

If I could get my current salary to do nothing I would absolutely do that.

There was also better benefits and companies used to show loyalty to their staff (before they handed in their notice - like it seems to be these days). Arguably there was less free time activities too. They also were born during or just after the war, so were brought up with frugalism instilled in them at an early age (in England, at least).

People say this but then get lost when they stop working.

The issue is most people haven't spent such an extended time without some sort of work-like schedule since they were children. And being an adult and not having any purpose is very different than being a kid and not having any purpose.

Uh I take 4 months off every year

It's awesome

People who can't handle it have hobbies including eating chips and watching TV. Jobs are not what make you fulfilled

imagine not having a job, but instead having the time, funds, and means of exploring the world, finding new interests, and... you know, living life without a ball and chain. you might like not having a job. you might like not NEEDING some sense of fulfillment from frittering time away to corporations to be happy, when you could enrich your life in other ways

That's because boomers don't have hobbies. Their lives were working. I'm seeing the same thing with relatives who are retiring now.
