racking up overtime that made him the highest-paid city employee at more than $400,000 one year and none of his supervisors noticed it. Thats the conclusion of a review by Seattles Office of Police Accountability.

No one noticed because Im pretty sure most officers are in on the grift.

I'm pretty sure at my job it does, and it's a union job. I haven't done it because I like my time off, but I think you can take vacation and work those days for time and a half all day.

So the person didn't really work overtime, but triggered time and half pay by gaming the system, vacation time isn't really meant for that.

Well at circle k you can take vacation time and work. You don't get double time though as vacation is a seperate entity. So it prevents stacking overtime.

The other option would be to hire more officers to lessen the need for overtime. Problem with that is each of those officers now pull an annual salary, benefits, pension, etc and they're an ongoing cost.

Which is why it's cheaper to just run less staff and give them overtime. You aren't funding 4 pensions and 4 medical plans that way.

There's no way anyone can work 90 hours a week for an extended period and actually be performing at their best.

Really doesn't seem like a thing a cop should be doing. I did long days for long stretches fire fighting and building mills and by the end of your two weeks you're alloted a minimum 4 days off for a reason.

And even on those jobs it was typically 84 a week with the odd week of like 100 plus.

You really dont know how he does it or what hes doing. He could he work his regular shift then sign up for an overtime shift thats just sitting down in a building watching cameras for 12 hours, hired by a company. Then takes a week off work after those 90 hours. You have the idea that hes working 90 straight hard hours being in the streets getting into fights and stuff.

it doesnt say hes working 90 hours every week for years. It said once

Lol. No I don't.

I'm well aware most of a cops job is boredom. Regardless of whether you're in an office or fighting a fire or what you're doing you can't be close to your best when you're working those kinda hours.

And if he's getting overtime to just sit on his ass doing literally nothing then maybe that police department needs to manage its funds a lot better.

No company would waste money like that. Kinda absurd reading this when you constantly see articles about police saying they desperately need more funding.

If you think so. A lot of companies pay a lot of money for police presence. Ive worked events a lot of events where police presence was needed but the organizers were scared of making it seem dangerous if police are needed there. So for 10 hours we sat in an employee break room and would just come out if they needed us. Theres so much overtime available theres not enough to sign up for

i really think you guys know less and less about police the more its discussed

https://www.baltimorebrew.com/2021/07/07/baltimore-ig-police-officers-allowed-to-take-paid-leave-and-overtime-simultaneously/

The Baltimore Police Department allows sworn employees to take paid vacation or personal leave on days when they are simultaneously earning overtime even if the hours overlap.
The well-known and condoned arrangement, confirmed in a report released today by the Baltimores Office of the Inspector General, is spelled out in the agencys collective bargaining agreement with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge 3.
Still, Inspector General Isabel Mercedes Cumming notes in the report, the BPDs policy is troubling considering the long-standing problem of spiraling police overtime.
Although this practice is permitted and does not violate any City policy, it could be perceived as wasteful, Cumming wrote in the Investigative Synopsis.
She points out that BPD exceeded its overtime budget in the last two fiscal years by $12,013.506.
Just how much the redundant payments to officers cost taxpayers, however, is not clear in the report.
Cumming said her office was unable to determine the exact excess due to the BPDs particular practice of double payment for simultaneous paid leave and overtime hours.

Using your paid benefits and signing up for voluntary overtime isnt abusing peoples dime or government spending. What if the overtime is paid by private companies off work hours?

90 a week though means that youre doing 10 hours on the weekend while working from wake to sleep Monday-Friday. And thats estimating 7 hours of sleep so you have an hour to commute both ways and eat and stuff.

90 a week is absolute insanity.

I used to do 100hr+ weeks when I was a runner for a post-production company about 20 years or so ago. Some days I'd just stay at work instead of going home as there was no real point (plus I wasn't particularly happy at home at the time). Was on 6 Red Bulls, 4 litres of Dr Pepper, a can of Coke and 2 teas a day. Wasn't by choice most times either - if you were on the late shift, you couldn't finish if anyone was still working in case they needed you. Was 7 days a week, with a week off every 5th week, so it was better than it sounded but still just too much.

I functioned perfectly tbh, just had absolutely no life whatsoever - nor any time to eat - on a good day I'd manage 2 sandwiches. Worst part about it was it was minimum wage so was only getting 3.30 p/h at the time. Managed to last 6 months somehow - only left when they wanted to train me up for another role, which would've been great if it wasn't another 3 hours a day on top of the work and hours I was already doing.

I literally don't see a problem with this >_>

Well there's the fact that it seems that Seattle needs to hire more police officers, considering the amount of overtime I'm sure they could have hired two more police officers at $100k minimum and theres also the fact that this officer (or any officer working 90 hours) is more prone to making mistakes due to exhaustion/fatigue, leading to the city losing lawsuits.

Thats a couple of issues, I'm sure there are many more.
