Combination of those things plus people realizing their time is more valuable that 8 bucks an hour.

Why bother working that dead end low paying job when youre still going to be poor?

Regardless of your job you should be able to afford the bare necessities of modern life like a roof, electricity, running water, AC/heat, food etc.

If working your job doesnt get me at least that what am I even doing here?

Unemployment as of May was around 5.5%

Before covid it was just under 4%

There isn't really a shortage, it's a wage issue.

In states that have ended federal benefits, the ending didn't really affect unemployment rates. It's still a wage issue

People weren't buying things with cash for awhile and apparently still aren't. None of the businesses in my city are having issues with it really anymore.

Even when I buy with cash I don't bother to carry around change, I don't have a change purse or anything and it just falls out of my pockets lol. When I tip I just round up.

that's over. it's been over for a while. but it was caused by the uncertainty about whether covid spreads via surfaces.

Personally, when Covid began and we collectively realized and began valuing our mortality and those of family and friends who are more susceptible, I realized FUCK this 8 to 5 grind life, and I quit my blue collar job. I was already making money playing music on the side, and figured I could transition it to full time and effectively work only two days a week. And I did. The first gig I had after quitting I made 250$ in tips. Another 100$ for the guarantee. At 16$ an hour doing a trade, I had already made in 4 hours playing music what I would make in 3 days of work at the trade.

And that was that. I don't regret a thing. I work odd jobs when they pop up and a few hours doing side gigs during the week to make up the weight if needed, and I effectively work 3 days a week. Gave me way more hours to record music and I wasn't burnt out from working in a shop without air conditioning at 95 degrees having the life sucked out of me and then too tired to do anything when I got home but sit and booze. Then on weekends you enjoy yourself, but there's always that nagging notion that the grind will be right back again on Monday. Sunday isn't even fun because you're just thinking of Monday the entire time.

Basically I'm saying that people value their lives and time more, because we're not worker drones, we think and feel and don't want to waste our lives making money for someone else. In jobs btw, that probably won't exist for much longer as everything continues on a path towards automation. McDonald's is already eliminating service jobs and tech is making clerical work nonexistent.

Eventually we're going to live in Wally-World where the machines are doing everything, and I have no idea what the fuck Republicans are thinking when they're telling people to get jobs that don't exist, and just want us to live in the employment hunger games where we all work McJobs while training and educating for the next wrung up, and even then forced into competition with eachother for said 'better' jobs that aren't even much better, and all the while expected to be grateful for everything and keep licking boots in order to be able to have boot straps to pull ourselves up by.

When the boomers were growing up you could have a job at a gas station and get a mortgage for a house. Most of my generation spent years living with their parents saving for a mortgage while making over 40k a year. Most of my friends from college consider their degrees wasted and don't work in the fields they went to school for, all the while they've racked up mountains of debt that some can barely afford the interest on.
