D.L. Hugeleys show was racist as fuck looking back on it now, especially against whites, asians and latin americans every single one on the show was some stereotype
Glad I'm not the only one who thought that. Even back then, I thought the show was racist.

Also, the son from that show is in prison for murder, I believe.

his character was meant to be bigoted/ignorant. he was a Black Archie Bunker and was constantly getting made a fool of in the show.

his positives were that he made a "kingdom" out of a vending machine hustle despite his upbringing, and starting a family away from the hood.

his character was also revealed to have not graduated high school, something "Darryl" meant to keep a secret because he was ashamed. he'd regularly say ignorant things and usually end up looking dumb in the end. Pat Morita's character would snap back at him regularly, as would his White neighbors.

Darryl eventually got shamed for calling his son "dumb" all the time, too. in an episode where the son was shown to have dyslexia and Darryl basically realizing he was making his life harder by being a dick all the time.

but "Darryl Hughley" is basically a Black Archie Bunker, and the best parts about him are actually the people around him who still love him anyway.

I remember I was going to watch something on TBS and caught the last minute of House of Payne, it had some guy bleeding to death from a gunshot in the living room. I was like "that was a sitcom?".
bro... every black sitcom had "the gun episode"

The Tyler Perry shows don't know how to do those episodes correctly though. Like there's an episode of Meet the Browns where a bullied kid brings a gun to school and Cora's actively trying to prevent a murder. Instead of focusing on that, they intercut it with scenes from the B-plot.

Like I said earlier, the show didn't know how to handle tones, like at one time it's suppose to be funny or try to be then suddenly they're having an argument over the daughter being on drugs or a former crackhead or something or one minute they're laughing the husband bungled something for his fire station job and the next a racist cop is itching to beat the black kid or frame him, like wtf pick a tone and stick with it, it's like going to a comedy show and after 3 jokes the comedic starts going off on a rant about how thanks to his ED his wife cheated on him and now they're going through a messy divorce

I respect Tyler Perry, but that's basically a huge portion of his work. A weird mix of comedy, tragedy and Christian tones that comes out pretty awkwardly. Very noticeable in the Madea and Mr. Brown themed projects.

that's probably way I don't like his work, it feels preachy like black people need to turn to god every single time there's a crisis and if they don't then are punished by the crisis getting worse until they do accept god into their lives and even then it might not get better just slightly less bad, it feels like threatening people rather than the lord coming to lend aid when called.

I liked Diary of a Mad Black Woman, but Madea's Family Reunion soured me on Tyler Perry's shtick pretty hard. The scene where the woman forgives her mom for pimping her out to her stepfather was just extremely gross to me.

That's why I never bought that "black people never had representation" myth. The 90's was full of it. I felt very represented.

For sitcoms/comedies we had them but we were still lacking in a bunch of other shit lol.

I quite enjoyed Sister Sister.

Now that same show unchanged would have been marketed as being super woke, progressive and diverse.
