lol at GTA and Warcraft. But this is the same site that thought Agent 47 was a nobody and would lost to Tanner, so I am not surprised

Fire Emblem had two phases. It was obscure before Fire Emblem 7 on the GBA and it exploded when Awakening came out. So if Fire Emblem is a good answer, it's because of 7, not Awakening

Nier and Ace Attorney are the best answers here

The Trails series is something I had only ever seen mentioned on B8, but right when I picked it up a year ago (actually right when ToCS3 released on the Switch) was when everyone started talking about it.

Also, Nier with Nier Automata.

I'm not sure Trails is "big" yet. Just bigger than it used to be.

Ys 8 is still Falcom's best-selling game AFAIK, and even that's not really big.

Maybe the thing that makes Trails feel "big" is that most of the people who play it play a lot of the games? Like with a lot of breakout hits, people just play the new one, but with Trails there are more people playing 7+ games in the series.

Out of the Park Baseball
Football Manager

Those kinds of games

They were always kinda nerd-sports popular PC games in the 90s.
But now Football Manager is a top 20 concurrently-played staple on Steam.

A lot of it is really just me seeing a bunch of playthrough topics here on B8, and elsewhere on GameFAQs. That, and there's always at least one person to bring it up in recommendation topics.

Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings.

I don't know anyone else who played EUIII. But Paradox games now seem pretty big on Steam.

Maybe Dangan Ronpa? It's more than just games now.

That's just the "cult" part of "cult hit"
