There's this sweet looking BMW at this car lot near where I live. I've been saving up a lot of money, so I'm strongly considering buying it. Unfortunately, I know nothing about buying cars from a lot. I'm just trying to figure out how this works.

My current car is a piece of crap that I got for really cheap from a family member because no one wanted it lol

It's going to depend on a few things.

1) How much of the cost are you financing?
2) What's your credit? (Basically, how good of an interest rate are you going to get)
3) How often will you be making payments? Monthly? Twice a month?

Plus they add stuff on top of the purchase price like gap coverage and things.

Depends on down payment, interest rate and how long you want to pay it off.

this.

you can find payment calculators online where you type in the principal, interest rate and duration of the loan and it'll tell you the monthly payment.

be wary about buying a used BMW, especially if it has high miles. repairs on those things are frequent and pricey.

This. If it overheats once then it's more or less fucked. BMWs are a hell of a lot more trouble than they're worth and ridiculous to repair.

If you're looking to spend around $9k-$10k on a used car, buy something more reliable.

You can basically get a used 2015-2018 Hyundai Sonata for that price.

It'll be a lot cheaper to operate, from a gas perspective, and much cheaper to repair, should something go wrong.

Thanks for the replies. I guess the BMW is out of the question :(. It's used and have two previous owners.

My credit is around 750 something last I checked and I heard age also kind of play a part in this. I'm 26 and live in a pretty good neighborhood. Will any of this matter?

Age matters for insurance. Credit history too since you can't really have one before 18 I think.

It may depend on the state but if you have a lien on the car you may be required to pay for full coverage insurance.

While your credit may be 750, have you ever had any other financed vehicles? And credit cards or credit lines? Because 750 with little-to-no credit utilization doean't look as good as someone that is using their credit and showing that they're able to make their payments on time.

Also debt-to-income ratio matters. If you're drowning in rent, phone, credit card, and student loan debt, you wont look as attractive to a lender or get premium rates.

That being said you might get anywhere from 1% to 7% apr depending on the lender. With a 10k loan and depending on the length of the loan (1-5 years) your payments could be as little as 100 to as much as 400.

Neighborhood is probably more of a factor for your insurance.

I have a credit card that I pay off every month. Right now I'm not in any kind of ridiculous debt so far.

I'm always hearing really good things about Honda's generally, so that's probably what I'm going to look into next.

My current car is a 2008 Honda Civic which I've had since early 2013. No major issues with regular oil changes and etc so I'd recommend looking into one.

I recently went through the whole used luxury car decision for a second vehicle and as others have said its not as great of a deal as it looks. Simple repairs or even oil changes can be pricey depending on the model. If its a second vehicle and you are willing to do the work yourself it can work out but its not a great idea if budget is one of the primary concerns.

Also, when buying anything, focus on the final price. The dealers will do all they can to get you a monthly price within your range if you give them one but that will likely end up costing you more. They can stretch $10k out years if it brings the monthly down but you will end up paying way more for the car. You are better off just negotiating the final price before you talk about financing options.

Don't buy a beamer.

The repair costs are absurd and they aren't half as great as people think they are. Bmws glory days are a thing of the past.
