Played the first one, but dunno what this one's about. Heard some people say it's not as good (battle system changed) or the...kingdom-building aspect sucks. Something like that. But fie on them, I say!

Let's do dis.

PS: I hope that annoying gnome isn't in this game!

This is on PS4.

In the first five minutes, the President of not-America is isekai'd into the fantasy world from the first game. At least, I'm pretty sure Ding Dong Dell was that place in the first game where that fat-ass cat ruled. Dunno why some mouse (???) kid is the king now, but whatevs. I wonder if I'll play as him or this president guy.

Oh my, the black knight is one of those pigs (maybe???) who lived in that weird mechanical city. I wanna say it was...Hamelin? Hamburg? Something like that.

I also like how this dude brought a loaded piece into his isekai world, and the chick isn't surprised in the least. You'd think this society had a lot of bowyers and stuff, but naw, an ammo-replenishing 9MM is totally normal!

Damn, Ghibli sure likes to murder mother figures. I'm sure this off-screen death won't be reversed later or anything.

If the Black Knight hadn't fallen off a cliff due to plot contrivances, I would've whooped his ass, lmao.

Also, Nella came back from the "dead" long enough to tank a Hyper Beam and die for realz.

I largely didn't enjoy the game. I beat it, but it was mostly because I kept hoping it would get better.

I'd probably have liked it better if it was more similar to the first game (like using monsters and locations more directly from it) instead of it being vague pointless references to the first one.

Yeah, I'm not sure why they quit doing the pokemon sorta stuff from the first game. Traveling around and raising your own dragon, robot and banana tree was pretty funny. It wasn't perfect, but nothing so far has been as simple and goofy/fun as that. Other complaints:

  • every enemy drops 900 items
  • the text size is really small (when you're wandering around)

Went through the bandit area ("Roland chased the man in black across the desert..."), then got the girl and her dad as party members. I swear, the spine of whatever lived in this canyon went through about 200 mountains -- ridiculous!

Did the Goldpaw events, too. Way cooler than the Japanese-influenced town in the first game, although getting around is a little more annoying (if you're not teleporting). Those annoying birds that squawk like Gilbert Gottfried were single-handedly the funniest thing so far.

It's shocking that there's no bestiary in this game. That's one of the things the first game had that should've been brought over. Given how every monster explodes into items, and you need specific items to finish these sidquests, there's really no excuse for cutting that out.

Whew, made some good time today. Got my own ship and made it out to Hydropolis, where it's time for more fetch-questy goodness. And by goodness, I mean badness. Granted, you don't get any sidequests until about five hours into the game, so at some point, I was hoping THOSE weren't left out as well. (*monkey paw curls*)

My settlement-building stuff is coming along pretty well. Can generate about 350KG per dose, so I'm sitting pretty in a lot of ways, which most of my stuff built (except an inn) and a few things at LV2 or more.

It's weird how Evan keeps having these weird talks with a weird kid in a dreamworld (???) like he's Sheogorath. That almost confirms it's some legendary figure, like li'l Ferdinand, or he's really an evil guy. Hell, he even straight-up asked, "What would you do if someone close to you betrayed you?" Chapter 7: A Traitor in Our Midst. How odd!

Melted Lisa Simpson is really a Chinese dragon -- nice. Too bad he can only go Saiyan for ten seconds or whatever and reverts to his embarrassing for afterwards.

Kinda miss the smaller cast from the first game. Three people + monsters was way more fun than six humans + creatures you don't care about or even bother learning their names.

I do kinda like the kingdom-building aspects (even though they seem kinda shallow), but the first one had way more charm. The pokemon aspect goes a long way, and that doesn't really translate to this one very well. =|

Roland: Naw, I need to take a nap

LMAO

I like how they're trying to do a fakeout on how Roland is a "bad guy" off-screen, when really it'll be something really stupid, like a doppelganger, or a holographic projection, or a homonculus clone gone bad, or a trick to get in with the enemy, etc.

The combat seems too bland and hack-and-slashy for me to play on higher levels. There are enemies who don't even stagger from some abilities and some attacks (like Roland's magical forcewave) have really long recovery times, so dealing with all that + higher damage seems awful. I'm constantly thinking, "Damn, I wish my banana tree/robot/dragon was here."

To be fair, though, those higgledies do come through a lot. I have a LV10 darkness-elemental one that nukes an area for 3000+ damage, which has been insanely great against some bosses. Lots of times, the two kids in my party die, so I'm just running around, dodging attacks, trying to use my dark nuke. I think it pierces those goo enemies who turn into metal slimes, so that's always nice -- and even more so on crowds.

NNKII is an ambitious game. It doesn't recapture the same magic as the first game in the series, but it's still worth playing. Kingdom-building is actually my favorite addition, while the chibi overworld look is the single worst change, imo.

The two games are really different but in the first you collect familiars as drops and in the second you collect enhanced weapons as drops so there is a similarity.

The first game stands out for being studio Ghibli and the second game stands out for having the spirit of studio Ghibli: its dungeon which tell a story of the first game, for actually having a country with open enrollment, and showing how leadership inspires people to work together.

Yeah, the chibi overworld blows. Not sure what meth they were smoking, but it's a strict downgrade.

Kingdom-building stuff is really good, but I can't help but feel underwhelmed by some of its qualities. It would've been about 100% times better if I could've chosen the spots the shops were built on (with maybe having the garden and square's locations fixed). Evan's been decent, but some of the things he says are dimestore Oliver-isms, lol. Didn't the first game have something to do with his dead mom? Maybe it's hard to recapture that gravity when you're basically just jaunting around the world, signing treaties, and presumably going to do some lame-ass elemental shrines later.

I wonder if I'm already at the end of the game or if it's just a fakeout. Only have 80 citizens and there's supposed to be 100-ish, but the game is ramping up for the "let's kill the final boss" push where everyone unites and overcomes their racial hate, etc. Probably a fakeout...

The most boring parts are the army battles. I guess since I recruited some new units (mostly about LV20) I can probably get through, but man, some battles are kinda close. Having a bunch of enemies near cannons and archery towers, plus surprise teleporting ambushers, is garbage. Might have to use airship cannonades to destroy some of that garbage, but mostly I just wing it.

Whew, beat the Horned One after a half-hour battle. You really don't do much damage without hitting its glowing weakspot, unfortunately, so while you're scrambling around avoiding its evil lasers, you have to rush back to center, hit a few times, then go away again. Boring battle, to be sure.
