I know nukes are bonkers powerful, but the mothership was a quarter the mass of the moon and the entire thing got obliterated

From the inside maybe. That's just a guess on my part. At best it would've fucked shit up inside and made the ship crash into the city fucking that shit up.

Pretty sure the nuke itself wasn't what did it, but it caused a chain reaction. Like when Luke blew up the Deathstar

ID4 is an entertaining movie, it is not a good movie. World of difference.

It definitely wasn't a quarter mass of the moon. If the movie said it was then it was wrong.

They likely meant quarter diameter of the moon but even that was wrong since that would mean the ship by itself could cover half of the east coast of the USA and it obviously wasn't that big.

Edit: also blowing it up would result in more human death than the weapon it fired.

The mothership would be the thing that Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum go to and blow up in space, not any of the ships that destroy landmarks on earth.

I thought they nuked the one in the atmosphere. Otherwise why would Jeff Goldblum's character be upset about it afterwards?

I want to know what happened to all the aliens. There had to be a huge number of them that were still alive.

The mere existence of something that big in Earth's orbit would have caused earthquakes and huge waves. The actual destruction of the ship would have been an extinction-level event.
