It's unreal.

The masks coming off meant jack shit and actually made things worse on that front.

Yes there are labor and supply shortages just about everywhere and yes its going to be months or years before things normalize.

Pilots
Cooks
Movers
Factory workers
Semi conductors
Etc ad infinitum

It's all fucking short and it's going to fucking short. Shut the fuck up It's roughly everyone being affected stop being a whiny bitch at underpaid workers and then surprise pikachuing when they quit or don't give a fuck about their job.

The store next door to mine shut their dining room. Drive thru only not enough staff.

The moving companies my parents tried to use? Booked for months and only using half their trucks because they can't get workers.

My brothers workplace cut their hours by 2 hours because they don't have enough closers.

Which has been great for me and my clients, because I'm an employment counselor who helps people with intellectual and/or physical disabilities find work. Employers get a tax break and cheap labor, my clients get work, state funds get used and my paycheck is insane right now. The state funds us and we are paid for every single minute of work including drive time to come as close to using our budget as possible.

Everywhere. One of the weirdest things I've seen lately was a line at the door to fucking Applebee's (lol) at lunch time on a Tuesday because 3/4 of the restaurant was closed down due to only having 2 servers, a manager and a bartender. Applebee's.

I work with tourists (My buisness is not understafffed and I'm paid well) and I tell them the simple fact is people were smartened up and are refusing to work for pennies when they could make dimes. In my area the rate of pay has increased 40% across the board. This is exactly why the 9-5 5 day a week work week exist. People will just not show up to make a stand. I imagine min-wage is going to be raised within a year, they can't get away with it anymore and people know it. Appreciate the fast food workers, they give you convenience in life.

Mine did. Problem still stands, tons of $500 sign on bonuses, people are not going to be working under sub 10 an hour conditions anymore, they've smartened up. The rate of pay has to increase otherwise it's going to be bad.

I feel like people are literally waiting it out and choosing unemployment regardless of the bonus. Even without it you're still getting more than min-wage so why should you work? I've got a good read on the situation and it's simple: Livable wages. If you pay your employees properly they will fucking show up for work. Min wage is way too fucking low nowadays and that's just a simple fact.

But once benefits run out and people are forced to find a job, don't you think employers will realize that and pay them lower than or at best as much as before the pandemic?
Seems to me like it'll be a game of who will break first: major retailers who can afford to take the hit from lost profits/productivity, or John Smith whos about to lose his house and is tired of watching his family eat gov cheese so he'll take what he can get?

History repeats itself man. Watch this video, it's a great take on what's going on right now (without being directly so he's just a teacher and historian) Historically, people have said FUCK IT and went to business for themselves.

Don't businesses know about supply and demand? When there is a demand for something you pay more for it. There is a demand for workers. You have to pay more!

My boss gave me the approval recently to hire seasonal entry level folks at an actually reasonable wage.

The quality of the people applying has also gone way up because of it. As a boss, it's nice to keep employees happy and because the quality has gone up I don't need to worry about flakey people applying and being a poor employee. It should also balance out financially because if I'm able to hire good employees then I won't need as many people.

Or you could lose them because trying to have Razor thin "just enough" labor leads to burnout. Also risk of collapse if there are call offs and probably them doing whatever they can to skimp on work to still leave on time.

None of the lobbies at fast food joints seem to be open yet in my area.

I generally just hit the drive thru anyway but it's something I've observed. Probably only have enough staff to run the drive thru and grill

people are forced to find a job

what makes you think that's going to happen

part of the impact of the shutdowns was people spent a lot less money

people also are working in the gig economy instead, and making ends meet that way while they wait for real opportunities.

the whole point of an emergency fund is so you dont have to take a job because you are 'forced to'

people actually did that this time and now it's shareholders' turn to get fucked

do you mean major retailers who have debt up to their eyeballs and shareholders that will literally murder them if they post a preventable quarterly loss because they were trying to fight a war with their labor pool

capital isn't as strong in this negotiation as you think

But just think of all the bonuses they can pay out to the bigwigs. What customer needs timely service? What employee needs to not be stressed out of their mind?
