As a fan of the series, no. The characters and writing are some of the worst for the franchise and the game is horrendously unoptimized.

The game play itself is tight enough I guess, and the different planets make for some variety in scenery, but if you're already starting to get burned out on the formula this game is definitely not going to draw you back in.

3 has way better movement and more balance between the playable vault hunters. Lot of good Quality of Life things, y'know?

But the story (and villains) pale in comparison to 2. The late-game falls off pretty quickly with farming, too.

But the guns are pretty cool. Each manufacturer got a new gimmick. eg. Jakobs' guns ricochet on headshots, Dahl guns have a secondary fire mode, Hyperion added a front shield when ADS firing.

I thought it was decent. But I also think the story and characters are trash in all the games, and I don't really think this one is that much worse than the others.

In terms of just shooting things, I had a decent time. But I don't really know how the end game goes and I've only done a single normal play through, where I've played over 200 hours of the other games and played through at least normal mode with every character in the series. So I can't comment on end game, build variety, character viability, etc.

I will say that the normal guns (not legendary) felt very samey compared to purple/blue guns of 2 some reason. Idk what it was.

The map system is terrible
The things they did with new and old characters are terrible (very few exceptions, Cpt Traunt, Typhon, and Film Buff are amazing. Ava's almost as bad as Pickle and Tina, Lorelei is annoying, they did Maya dirty af, and the twins are just pure wasted potential. They had one funny exchange in the entire game [the train station where they're pretending to be PA announcers])
Level design ranges between okay and holy shit bad
Character skins and heads are not great. There's a lot, but most of them blow. Though I do appreciate being able to adjust the color on skins.
I'm not great at weapon/grenade/class mod/shield synergies but weapons feel very unbalanced and it's extremely easy to get more legendaries than you can eat so you'll just be drowning in garbage orange guns for most of your playthrough
Story and writing have never ever been a Borderlands strong suit, and as the series goes on it keeps getting worse and they keep force feeding it to you even harder

Climbing is fun
Graphics are great
Revenge of the Cartels is one of the best seasonal events of all time and they just made it permanent
Skill trees are fun

I wanted to like 3 but jeez. Worth a play but it's a letdown.

Also a big reason I didn't replay the game is that I heard long segments of boring, unskippable story bog down the experience. This was a minor issue in 2, but I think it's a lot more obnoxious in 3 and idk if they ever fixed it.

It's not 2, the pre-sequel and 3 just pale in comparison to 2. It was interesting, but not interesting enough to hold my interest and make me want to go play the DLCs immediately. In fact, I haven't played any of them so far.

No it's terrible the story is ass.
(And the character weapon screen lags so god damn much it's unacceptable and unplayable coming from someone on a base xbox one idk if they ever fixed it).

1 to presequel were perfect idk 3 did nothing for me.

The graphics were the exact same. Maybe being on a white moon was bland but so was being on the ground for all the other games.
I'm probably the only one who enjoyed the zero gravity jump aspect. But it wasn't bad because you had a ground pound and it was halo physics.
Story wise yes it was still better than 3 honestly. You got to see the whole reason why 2 happened and it was really entertaining.

It's not just that. It's just the overall color palette. Somehow they managed to make every color blend together, which I still can't understand because its Borderlands....

I don't mind the zero gravity bit, but other games also did that, and imo better.

3 extremely obviously withheld a ton of content to sell as DLC (or save for BL4) and really soured me on the series. All the previous games were good as is, and dlc just made them better, but 3 was still lacking even after 4 dlcs (and they still tried to drag out another lackluster season pass, that's when I got off).

I felt the first one is the best by far.
2 and 3 were good but 2 just felt like one long drawn out DLC of 1 and 3 gets bogged down with all the traveling and while the weapons are fine I went through long stretches of the game without changing the 4 accessories.
The Prequel was terrible.

3 sucks. I had tried to get through it 4 times before finally succeeding with four friends and we all hated it and just wanted to get it done. The maps are waaaay too fucking big and all the cool ideas that it has or new gameplay changes are overshadowed by how poorly it runs all the time. Way too often they have you just sit still too and listen to a story that rivals square enix games in how terrible it is

I spent most of my time in that arena killing stuff on mayhem 3. I know there is mayhem 10 now but stopped playing around the time the ghost guns came out.

As a solo player I thought it was more fun that the previous game borderlands 2. I liked that slag was no longer a mechanic like it was in 2. I also like the fact that enemy health wasnt overly bloated. The 2nd game had that bee shield (the one that adds shield health to damage) to blame for the extra spongy enemies iirc.

Which is sad, as some of the additions to characters are fantastic. I LOVE Jakobs and Typhon is fun. It's such a fucking disservice how they treat past characters.

Ava, singlehandedly, makes the game unbearable. I've never seen a more annoying and frustrating character.

The story and characters aren't good. That being said outside of Handsome Jack that is pretty par for the course for Borderlands. Like usual there are certain characters/storylines that are entertaining but overall it's underwhelming.

Gameplaywise it's just a straight improvement over the other instalments. Better movement, more interesting guns, more fleshed out skill trees, better balancing (at least compared to 2). Maps have a range but at least to me are better overall, partially because of the verticality that is more possible. Obviously this is subject to performance but I don't have any issues in that regards, on PC.

My biggest gripe is that the base game feels incomplete. The first round of DLCs were all very good but it feels like without them you aren't really getting a complete game. Then again, I think BL2 pretty much feels the same way.

Nonono, according to Ana's writer, that mission was supposed to make you like her. Because, like, imagine if you were her and how embarrassing that would be. How can you not like her after that mission? You just didn't play that mission.

^ literally something the writer was arguing once about the hate against her. And I feel like he was trying to subtly hint that someone read his diary out loud but he didn't want to say it for some reason. How tf does that mission help with anything? She's still a trash character.

Krieg was way more fun imo. Loved how he had a melee specific playstyle with a unique weapon with tons of special stuff(tossing buzzaxes, exploding yourself for revivals, melee mode in general, never dying, mutant mode) my god, I loved Krieg. Amara never hit that sweet spot.

Went from a super funny, well written straight man doing his best in a wacky world to 'lol wacky randomz LMAO'.

At least some characters were done well. Rhys was fun. Brick, Tina, and Mordy were great. Hammerlock and Jakobs were fantastic. Claptrap was nice.

I couldn't stand anyone else. Well, the weird dinosaur side character for the Halloween event was funny, Maurice. I liked him.

I feel like that's been a pretty consistent trend in the series and one that increasingly makes me want to put it down and never play any sequels. If they're intentionally holding off all their good writing for DLC packs, game after game, then there's really no reason for me to ever buy the base game because I know the story is going to be crap.
